3rd Trimester

Irregular fetal heartbeat...anyone else?

I just got back from my regular OB appointment and they found that the baby has an irregular hb.

They are scheduling a special ultrasound to view the heart, which should be done sometime in the next 3 weeks.

Has anyone else experienced this with their baby? My doc says not to worry , but I am worried sick.

Re: Irregular fetal heartbeat...anyone else?

  • I had this with my son. His heart was skipping beats, idk if thats what your LOs is doing. I had to go for a special ultrasound and they checked all the chambers and valves. Turned out he had Premature Artial Contractions. They were gone before he was born

Do you drink/eat caffeine at all? Thats what mine turned out to be caused by,

I wouldn't worry too much and just try and relax. The ultrasound is very in depth. Good Luck. Also its pretty cool to watch :)

  • Had it with DD1 and had an u/s and NST every week for about six weeks up until 38 weeks - the valve wasn't closing all the way on DD's heart (kinda like a murmer).  The doc told me same thing, not to be concerned, that it would most likely correct itself prior to birth and if it didn't they would have a peds cardiac doc check her but otherwise she would probably be just fine (saying that if it doesn't correct prior to birth it may correct during birth when all the fluids are pushed out of babies lungs, etc.).  As I said, it cleared up at 38 weeks and she doesn't have any problems and is active and very healthy.

  • I had this issue with DS. At about 32 weeks my ob detected an irregular heartbeat and I had to go in for level II u/s and NST's every week for 4 or 5 weeks when it was resolved. The perinatologist told us that 98% of the time, fetal heart arrhythmia is benign and resolved prior birth. The other 1.98% of the time, it's resolved shortly after birth. It's extremely rare that it's anything to be concerned about.

I also had this issue with this pregnancy. We ended up seeing a pediatric cardiologist a couple of times and we also had to go in for monitoring once a week (like the other posters have said.) The heart problem, as the other posters said, eventually resolved itself on its own. When it first happened, the doctor advised us to buy a little home doppler monitor and we do check the baby's heart rate daily, even now. It really will help you feel more at ease. So I would advise buying one of those just to put your mind at rest and keep your eye on the situation.   Also make sure you are eating lots of bananas (like 2 per day) for the potassium, and cut out ALL caffeine. No decaf coffee, no chocolate, no tea, nothing - and try to keep your sugar intake steady (don't binge on sugary drinks or candy.) Hopefully yours will just go away as well, but in the meantime that's the advice that worked for us. Good luck!
