Babies: 0 - 3 Months

not cooing much

My daughter, who is 12 weeks today, rarely coos.  Like, maybe a couple times a day I get soft goo-goo noises from her while she's smiling.  It's always when I'm talking to her.  Other than that, it's just grunts.  I took her to the pedi today for something unrelated, and I asked him about it.  He said most babies her age coo pretty often, but that at this point he isn't concerned.  However, she needs to start doing it more, and if she's still pretty quiet at her 4 month appointment, they'll probably test her hearing.  I don't think she has a hearing problem as she turns to noises and likes music and singing.  Other than this, she seems on track developmentally.  However, I am now freaking out.

Does anyone else have a quieter baby, or any thoughts?  Thanks.

Re: not cooing much

  • ds doesnt coo hardly at all. he grunts mostly. he also doesn't smile very often. our pedi said if ds wasn't cooing/smiling in the next month or so to call. not sure what he thinks may be wrong but i also worry about it.

  • My nephew hardly coos/talks and if he does you have to work to get it out of him. There is nothing wrong with him, just not a talkitive little guy

  • LO doesn't coo all that much either, but I'm not *too* worried because she does "complain" a LOT. Her fussing is really varied and sounds like talking... it does suck not getting many happy noises, though

  • Thanks, ladies.  I'm glad we're not alone!  I talked to a couple of my friends, and one of them said her kids started cooing at 2.5 months, but really didn't do it that much til they were between 3 and 4 months.    Mallyboomer, Clara does the talking fuss thing too.
