Once Upon a Child

Has anyone has any experience with selling your kids' clothing/toys/gear at Once Upon a Child??  Thinking about doing this since I have LOTS of stuff to sell.

Thanks!

I have taken a few things in but never sold it to them as they wanted to give me next to nothing.  I have found that they are horrible to sell to but great to buy from.  I have been able to get back more from the tax deduction if I donate stuff vs selling it to them.

Ditto - selling to them wasn't worth it.  I would rather donate them to a church rummage sale - at least it will go to a good cause.  OAC just ends up selling them for WAY more.

  • You get about 1/6 of the original value of the item. It's been fine for me since I am not going to go through more trouble than that. I have better results if I take small batches.

  • Each one is different. So you might want to go to different ones to see what they need if the first one doesn't take a lot.  Look everything over really well and pull out anything that is stained.  Iron anything that's wrinkled.  If it won't store nicely in a glad XL bag or tub, then put it on a hanger.  Don't put things in garbage bags to take them there.  Things for older kids that aren't worn do better than baby clothes, but well kept baby gear does well.  I think you get about as much as you would on craigslist by selling there.  Maybe a little less, but it's much less  hassle too, IMO.  I made $87 there last weekend selling things my kids had outgrown and some toys they no longer used.

  • I have had NO luck taking in baby or maternity clothes.  They take 1/20 of what I take in.  I save myself the trouble and skip it.

Take your stuff as early as you can.  The sooner you take it the more they tend to take.  They most likely have a pretty good supply of summer stuff now.  Ask ahead when they will begin taking fall/winter stuff.  Plus dont expect to get much from it.  They will only give you half of what they think they can sell it for if that.

I take stuff there that is not in excellent condition that I sell to people I know looking for very gently owned things.

This was my experience also. Even things that were basic and brand new like a white crib sheet still in the package, they wanted to give me $1 for it. It's not nearly worth my time (since you have to drop it off and come back, or hang out for an hour while they go through everything).

  • I'd also recommend taking things in by season.  If you have old winter stuff that you're ready to put away now, save it until late summer then get it ready to take in.

  • I have had a similar experience as most it seems. Even very nice, name brand stuff they have turned down and I haven't a clue why. And they do not pay well, I got $13 for a big bag I brought in last time, and a friend got even less for even more things she brought.

  • I have never sold at Once Upon a Child, but am not surprised to read the responses.  Even shopping there is pretty hit or miss.  Have you heard of or have any JBF sales in your area?  It's a huge consignment sale - in my area once in the fall and once in the spring.  They charge $10 to consign and you get 65% of what sells, and set your own prices.  Check out the website for more details.
