Husbands gaining sympathy weight?

So my husband and i have always been athletic, with the athletic build, until this pg. I noticed his face was filling out, and i didnt think much of it yea its some sympathy weight.... so we both weighed ourselves yest. and has gained more than i have LOL. Is this going on with anyone elses DH/ SO ? i think its so cute honestly, it makes me feel better about my weight gain! But i honestly dont think hes doing it on purpose... he doesnt eat more than normal...

Re: Husbands gaining sympathy weight?

  • Yes, too much. DH is already overweight and I have definitely noticed his "under chin" area (I feel bad saying double chin lol) is getting bigger and bigger, and his stomach. With him it is because he has no self control. I have been eating really healthy most of the time and since he refuses to eat healthy he ends up eating separate meals than I do and it is usually pizza, fried chicken, mac n cheese, etc.

In the 5 years we have been together he is always saying he needs to lose weight and it never happens, I just hope the new gaining trend stops soon.

FWIW, the only reason I care about his weight is because all of the men in his family have weight problems and end up with heart problems. DH's dad passed away due to it when DH was 8 years old, his dad was only 37.

  • Nope, not over here. My DH could eat for days and not gain any weight. Yup, he's one of those. LOL

  • Mine has definitely gained some sympathy weight!!  He was pretty athletic before, but has been lazy with me a lot!  I got popsicles because it is so hot here and I think he's eaten more than me!!  Hope this stops soon .. Lol  But then again if he gains it maybe I won't gain as much?!  wishful thinking!

  • DH gained "sympathy weight" when I was preggers with DS#1 and has yet to lose it.  He started working out here about two months ago, but then hurt his leg and has to wait to get surgery done on it.  So, after that he's getting "back on the horse" and working out. I need him in shape to help me out with these three boys! LOL!

  • I WISH I was in your situation! My man has taken working out to the extreme! The last time I saw him this fit was when he wrestled in college. During that time I loved it! We both were fit? Feeling pretty sexy...Now, I am growing trying to keep toned while he is training for a triathlon looking like a million bucks!

i know thats scary, so far his weight gain hasnt gotten to this point yet. but i too worry that this will happen, Some of his family has weight issues too. Im not so worried right now because its too much, but my fear is when its time to lose OUR baby weight : P for his brothers wedding, he wont lose it..and will keep gaining. But for now im okay with it,as i approach beached whale status again lol

  • Mine hasn't, though, apparently, one of the nurses in my OB's office claimed her husband gained (wait for it) 100 pounds while she was pregnant.

100lbs!!!!!!!WOW! Thats too much mine has only gain 15lbs lol!!

  • i haven't weighed DH recently but at the beginning of this pregnancy he sarcastically stated that his goal was "to weigh more than you at the end of this pregnancy" since then he has had cravings, eats with me, eats more than me and finishes my plate if i can't - then goes back for more...i brought this up and he said he's pretty much giving up on his goal!  we are both runners and i hate that he hasn't ran in forever - usually by now we are both outside at the farms exercising...but it seems its just me now a days

Yeah, my hubby has put on about 10 pounds. I think it's because I've kind of let myself go and so we're always eating bad. This month i've decided that I'm going to try to eat healthier and be healthier for everyone's sake! Hopefully my weigh in next month won't be so dreadfull, ha ha.

  • My H did in the beginning. I think it was due to the fact that I NEVER ate like I do now before. I've always had a very hearty appetitie for a girl, but I would avoid certain foods that I knew kept weight on me ie:carbs. Now all I want is carbs. So that meant more pizza, more mexican, more itilian. This lead to the H and I both packing on the pounds. But of course, like most men he somehow dropped those 20 pounds in like two weeks and is back to his work out routine and looking sexy. (Which I fully welcome!) Ha!

My DH is also one of 'those' types that eats whatever and doesn't gain weight! Of course he's training for a 50 mile run this summer which certainly helps.  However, he can be pretty strict about what he eats, trying to avoid all processed foods, etc.  I can never stick to it.  Since I've been pregnant he's been REALLY relaxed about what he's eating which is helpful since I don't ever feel like cooking.

So this is actually a legitimate phenomena called couvade syndrome. Usually it is weight gain, nausea or disturbed sleeping.

My DH has actually had sympathy weight loss since I was losing weight because of the morning sickness. But, he says it is because I stopped eating so we haven't had take out or eaten out for months now.
