BR: What is the fascination with the garbage can?

The past week or so DS has been putting anything and everything he can get his hands on into the garbage can or our recycling can. The recycling can is always easier to pick through, since there's nothing really slimy or gross in there. 

Should I buy new garbage cans that prevent a nosey toddler from putting anything within reach in them?

I didn't know how others dealt with this.  

DS #1 born January 2010. DS #2 due June 2014.

    Ours sits between our dining area and kitchen, but I have moved it over to the gated kitchen area to keep kids out of it.  I HATE seeing them touch the top of that nasty germy thing!  Usually I just say "No, don't touch that!  It's yucky!  Go find a toy to play with."   Really this works after about the 10th time...  but I would put it up if it was becoming a problem.  GL!
