how to wean without getting mastitis?

I have a terrible case of mastitis right now, and I'm pumping every 2 hours and taking antibiotics. I'm planning to switch to formula as soon as I get over the mastitis and feel better. I'm sooo afraid of developing it again though, when I stop nursing/pumping. Any tips? Is it something I'll need to do really gradually or has anyone had success in quick weaning using cabbage leaves, no more milk tea, Sudafed, or anything like that? (and if you've used the tea or Sudafed, can you still feed LO your milk when you're on those things or do you have to pump and dump?) Thanks!

You will need to gradually stop.  Express a little bit only when needed.  It will hurt-especially with Mastitis.  Cabbage leaves offer temporary relief and it's worth spending the $2,.  Also, when you take a shower turn your back to the hot water.  Hot water stimulates the breast milk production.  Use ice packs and OTC pain relief (Advil or Tylenol).
