Is anyone adding non-baby things to their registry?

I have a friend who added a tv to their baby registry just so they could use their completion coupon towards it.  DH and I are thinking about adding a Dyson vacuum to ours this week since they are on sale.  We don't expect anyone to really buy it for us, it's just a way for us to get something we want at a bigger discount.

Re: Is anyone adding non-baby things to their registry?

  • I didn't do it before the showers, but maybe after I would.  I would hate for my friends and family to see a TV or something really expensive on there that they knew wasn't for the baby.  I think once your shower is over, it's fair game.

  • You need to check the stipulations on the completion coupon. A lot of time, certain brands are excluded. Especially big ones like Dyson.

Otherwise, I don't see the big deal. If your showers are done, no one is going to see it anyway.

i like this idea.  while i love the people coming to my shower, i can see a few getting a bit judgmental if they saw a tv on our registry!

I agree with this.  If Babies R Us carried tv's, DH and I would be all over it now that my shower is done!

I would add it after your showers are over.

Remember, though, that completion coupons are usually mailed out a few weeks before your due date (or whatever date you entered) and it seems a typical rule that anything added to the registry after the coupon is mailed will not be eligible for the discount.

I received my Target and BRU coupons about 6 weeks before my due date.

What store does that?  I've never heard of one that wouldn't let you add things to the registry to use with the coupon.

  • I've never heard of that either, but I still don't think I'd put anything on the registry for a coupon.  People check the registries even after the baby is born and that looks greedy even if it isn't your intent.

Because I am having #2 I started a registry that is under a psuedonym so that I can mentally see/buy what I need myself and not have to put it out there as if I expect gifts for baby #2.  I am sure I'll get a completion coupon in the mail for it.  That's always an idea...

Hmm.  Now I don't remember exactly where I read this (could have been somewhere on The Bump).  I feel like the coupons themselves said something about it, but I don't have either in front of me at the moment.

Oh, looks like we had a recent posting about it for BRU:

    I could be wrong, though!

  • How much will the Dyson be after the completion discount? Most of my completions are only 10% or so, and Bed Bath and Beyond accepts their 20% off coupons on Dysons, so it may be cheaper that way.

The Dysons are on sale this week at Target (20% off) and with my completion coupon that I received in the mail a few weeks ago it would be another 10%.  I looked at the coupon and Dyson is not one of the listed exclusions.  It also said it does not apply to items added after your event date (which would be June 4th).  I think I'll at least try it towards the end of the week and if I don't get the additional discount no biggie.  If I do end up buying it I would just remove it from my registry in case anyone looks at it going forward.

  • I am planning to add a Food Processor after the showers so I can get the completion discount.  I believe I'll have to do that at Target though because Amazon you can only use the completion on items in the baby store?  At least that's what I thought I read last week.

Though, technically that is baby related because I plan on using it to make baby few starting this winter!   I'll use it for myself until then though Smile

sounds like a good deal in that case! Go for it!

  • I would add a vacume cleaner, but not a tv.  One could argue that a vacume cleaner IS for the baby when he or she starts to crawl around.  Who wants their baby to crawl through dirt and dust a vacume cleaner doesn't pick up??  A tv?? I can't even wrap my head around how that could even remotely be baby related (in a positive way).

  • I added a few things that are FOR the baby but aren't baby things. I am going to make my own baby food so I put some containers for the food on the registry (among other things). I also put a drying rack for CDs and a big fabric bin for toys on as well. I think its fine to add a vacuum. Dyson's are expensive and the discount would be nice. I'm not so sure about a TV though...

  • I might get some items, but I don't know if they actually need to be on the registry. Some are semi-baby related, like a drying rack for the diapers. We need one and i'll be using the discount to get one.
