Preemies

35 week Preemie Twins, when do they eat well?

I had my twins on Easter at exactly 35 weeks. They are now 36 weeks. They are perfectly healthy but need to get better at eating so they are in the NICU. They are supposed to eat 50 ml every 3 hours. They eat the first 40 pretty well, but struggle with the last 10. Everyone has told me it will be like a light switch reflex and they will begin to eat right.

When did your babies have that reflex kick in???

  • It is definitely a "light switch" moment.  My 34 week preemie starting eating really well around 36 weeks...it was literally overnight.  He had an NG tube one day and the next, it was out and he was sucking down bottles like he was starving!

  • My 35 weekers were in the NICU for 14 and 16 days.  For DD1 the light switch flipped on about 12 days in.  It was NG tube changing day, and they didn't put the tube back in to either of them just to see how they would do.  DD1 never got the NG tube put back in, DD2 however was a stinker for a little longer.  Her light switch came on about the 15th day.  I understand that it is frustrating, I have been in your shoes exactly!  Be patient, and it will happen!  My girls will be 3 months old next week and it seems like yesterday I was still having to get in the car and drive to the hospital to see them!  I hope your LO's catch on soon!!

My girls were born at 35 weeks as well. I really agree with the "light switch reflex" Just like your twins, they were perfectly healthy but just needed to get better at eating. I remember walking into the NICU on a Sunday and the doctor told us that Scarlett would be ready to go home Tuesday. Scarlett was in for 10 days and Nadia was in for 12 days.

  • I have 36 weekers, but they had premature lungs due to my GD, we worked on the lung issues first and then the feeding.  In fact, my son went home (and still is on) oxygen.  We live in Colorado though.

It seemed to take my little boy a LOT longer than my little girl, but like the others have said, one day they just "got it".

My preemie's light switch turned on at about 37 weeks. They said this was later than they expected, but since then she is doing great!

Just give them time, they will eat!!

Congratulations Mama! What a cool day to be born!
