XP: Grocery shopping with 2 LOs?

So DS is 2 and DD is 5 months and I can't figure out shopping with both of them. DD's carseat can't sit in top of buggy and DS hates sitting up top. He also isn't ready to just walk beside me. I have to have DH with me to get everything we need. I can do short trips with just a few items, but not the whole shebang. I know it'll be easier once DD can sit up, but for now what can I do? Any tips? TIA,1ht

  • Can you try putting her car seat in the bigger part and just squeez your groceries around the seat and in the top part.

And if I were you, I'd just make my DS sit in the top part and distract him with snacks.

  • Well when I go really grocery shopping there's not enough room that way, especially if I were to get DS to stay in the top. That's generally what I do when I make a quick trip for just a few things, and I've tried the buggies with the little seats in front for DS to sit in. He likes to swing on the handle and slide out of those. He does better walking than in the top seat though at times.

  • Our grocery store has a really wide top part, so I use to put DS's car seat in there.  I have no idea what I would have done if they had carts like you.  Do you have anything that you can wear your DD with and leave her car seat in the car?

  • I do it one of four ways:

    1.  5m old in carrier (Ergo), 22m old in top of cart

    2.  5m old in carseat in main part of carriage* (and I put groceries around him), 22m in top of cart

    3.  I get a babysitter and go alone

    4.  I leave my 22m old with one of my friends and just take the baby

I do the majority of my grocery shopping alone.  My husband is deploying for 7 months next week (and has been gone a lot since DS was born) and I have a regular babysitter who comes at the same time every week so that I can run errands.  But on the days where I need to go with both kids, the Ergo is the most realistic.

*DS is no longer in his infant seat so I don't do this anymore

  • What about the double stroller? I have one of those mom clips on the stroller handle, I have some reusable grocery bags that I attach to the clip, and push the kids in the double while doing my grocery shopping that way. If he will tolerate being in the stroller more than the cart, it might be worth a shot.

When my daughter was that age, I just wore her and put my son in the front of the cart. Now, my daughter sits in the front and my son either sits where I put the groceries (if it is deep enough), he walks, or he rides on the side of the cart.
  • I either went when dd was in mmo ... or she sat in the cart while I carried ds in the bjorn.

now they ride in either the car carts (which they play and fight and go nuts)... or ds sits in the cart and dd walks and grabs food for me.

distraction is a big part of it with a toddler. play games... find the green veggie... or let's see who can find the broccoli first...  or have him help pick the cereal.   distraction.

  • I grocery shop three ways:

    1) Car seat in the big part of the cart, Katie in the upper small part, putting groceries around the car seat and under the cart.

    2) Go with my husband, one cart just for kids, the other for groceries.

    3) My grocery store has a few different fun kid-friendly carts. I can put the car seat in the top basket, then Katie can sit in the plastic bucket type seat that is in back of the top basket. This frees up the big part for lots of groceries.

Or there is this that I stumbled upon that I might try:
