High-Risk Pregnancy

Failing a NST question

I am sure I am stressing out about nothing, but I wondered if anyone else was in the same boat.

We have always had some issues with NST this pregnancy, but I officially failed the NST last week in the office so they sent me up to l&d for monitoring. 3 hours and a fluid check later, we finally passed, but even that was questionable.

I am so grateful they we have actually made it this far between PIH and being Type II, but the thought of another emergency c/s because of a failed NST scares me, but not as much as the thought of her going into distress and me not knowing it.

So has anyone failed a NST and it turn out ok?

Re: Failing a NST question

  • Thank you for asking this! I have my first NST tomorrow and I havent even thought about the idea that I may fail.

I have already failed my one hour GD test, my three hour GD test, my ultrasounds have not been too great lately so now Im on bed rest. With the way things are going - I should have asked about failing the NST too.

  • I hope that everything works out well for you.  Are you going in for biweekly NSTs right now or are they seeing you weekly?  How are your BFPs going?  At any rate, best of luck to you and your LO.

  • i failed my BPP at 37wks with DS and was induced that evening.  no emergency c-section for me. I failed due to decreased fetal movement and super low fluids.

  • I have a healthy 2.5 year old and I failed many NST's during the course of my pregnancy for various reasons.  If your doctor felt that you should be sent home from L&D then I would not worry (though I would pay attention to what ever they told you to pay attention to and call your doctor at the first sign that something isn't right).  Good luck!!!

  • This may be a stupid question, but what is an NST?

  • I failed one on Wednesday after 3 hours of monitoring.  The ultrasound showed good fluid levels though so I was sent home and told to come back a day later.  During that 2nd NST, it was like I had a whole different baby. Her heartrate went from a constant 105 to up in the 140s and very reactive.  Another ultrasound confirmed good fluid levels and this time she was practice breathing.  I had a 3rd one today and baby did great again.  Guess she was just having an off day.
  • I did with my dautghter and they monitored her for 12 hours before her movement and accelerations returned to normal (at about 36 weeks)  I ented up developing preeclampsia so I had to deliver at 37 weeks, but I had a very healthy baby girl that was medically ready to go home before I was.  It was a scary thing and they were concerned, but it all turned out fine.

Non stress test, basically they monitor the baby while you are resting.

  • I had PIH which turned into pre-e and I failed my NST every week.  I started them at 34 weeks for a totally unrelated issue and had a weekly one until I was induced at 37 weeks.

I knew going in I was going to fail each week and be sent up to L&D.  They would monitor me for a few hours, see that my bp went back down when I was laying down (I was on bedrest at the time) and then send me home.  We had a plan that we were holding on to be induced until 37 weeks unless things got bad.  Luckily we were able to make it that far.

DS was born healthy but small and is now a very active almost 2 year old.

  • Thanks ladies for the advice and good stories! We ended up passing the NST yesterday after searching for a while. But it looks like my PIH is turning into full on pre-e so now we are just waiting to test results. :/ High risk is so much fun, right?
