Developmental Exercises

Hi Ladies,

My LO is 3 months and 1 week old.  She's great at holding up her head when we're holding her to burp her, but she hasn't quite caught on to the idea of holding up her head while tummy time.  She likes to rub her face into her blanket she's laying on. :)  Now we haven't given her a chance in this area either, we're really only starting to do tummy time daily for the last few weeks.  But are there any exercises you would suggest for getting this to be easier for her?

Also, any suggestions of any other exercises for development would be appreciated!  Now, we're not the drill sargent type to want her to specific spot by a certain date...but we're really just looking for anything that will make all of these little milestones easier on her. :)

 Thank you!

Re: Developmental Exercises

  • Have you tried tummy time on the boppy? When my LO was smaller, tummy time on the boppy went over much better than tummy time on the floor.

  • DS would do the same thing you describe until a couple weeks ago. We realized he just didn't want to use his arms. I read somewhere that you can fold a towel in half, put it under their chests and lift them up a little bit because the natural reaction would be to put their arms and legs down. It's supposed to help strengthen their arms and in turn will help lift that chest and head off the ground. It has worked for DS. Also, putting him down for a couple minutes at a time after diaper changes has helped him get used to it.

  • if your LO will grab your fingers let her either lay on her back, or on your knees facing you on an angle - get her to grab on to your fingers and show her how to do mini pull ups by gently pulling against her hands - just move her barely off the ground or so at first and see if she starts to support her neck. obviously don't keep going if she doesn't support her head/neck. eventually she will start pulling herself up a little.

This site, a partner with the AAP, is super informative and helpful. My pedi suggested it when I wanted info about appropriate development games to play.
