  • I pray this deals the death blow to Al Queda it deserves and brings peace and some sense of closure to those who've lost family in the years since the 9/11 attacks.  I am not sad to see Bin Laden dead.

I hate to see celebrating in the streets, however.  This is not something to celebrate.  When we celebrate the way I've seen on TV, we're no better than the anti American extremists we see and abhor.  It may have been a necessary event, it may have been justifiable, but it is still lamentable.

It is sad that people hate with the intensity that they do - and I mean all people....Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddists....all religions.  Americans are, by no means, with sin in this department.  One only needs to look back at our own history to know that, as a Nation, we've done some incredibly horrific things.

This was my prayer last night:  May God bring us peace.  May God brings us closure.  God bless the US and guide us to the wisdom and maturity to continue the fight for good and not greed or revenge.

I completely agree with you here, H. I hope this finally brings closure to all those who were affected by 9/11, but we are definitely not without sin in this country.

And this part is what worries me the most. Unfortunately, all Americans abroad are being warned of possible retaliation. They are being asked not to gather en mass, and all US Embassies over seas are preparing for the worst case scenerio. The fear is that this will ignite Al Queda, not deal it a death blow. That terrifies me. I know that we can't live in fear, but we also cannot let ourselves be complacent and think that this is the end of it! That organization is vast and pissed now!

I luvs ya dude, but 100% disagree with this.

I think the people of NYC were justified in dancing in the streets last night.  The man who'd destroyed the twin towers, destroyed thousands of families and destroyed NYC's (and the rest of the US's) sense of security is dead.  There has to be some profound sense of relief, closure and in many cases (obviously) joy and happiness.

The people in the streets of the ME were celebrating the deaths of thousands of innocents.  The people in the streets of NYC were celebrating the death of one a$shole.

Besides, the celebrations have stopped in NYC according to the news.  It was almost a flash mob kind of thing and now people are going about their Monday morning business.

I don't judge them for celebrating for one night.  So to paraphrase Samuel L. Jackson in A Time To Kill:

Yes, he deserved to die and I hope he burns in Hell.

I agree with you 100% J.  It's a time of my life I will never forget, and to think of all the men and women in uniform that have died to find this man.

    PS. I love that movie.

I completely agree that they have the right to feel relief and closure, I would feel the same.  We'll just have to agree to disagree on the rest.  I don't believe two wrongs make a right in terms of "celebration".

And because I didn't specify, I was watching the scenes of the mobs outside of the White House  - not NY - and those folks were all young college aged kids.  Not the mothers and fathers, wives and husbands of those who were killed and continue to be killed in the war in the ME.  I'm guessing that 1 out 100 of those kids had any direct connection to anyone killed.   Those are the folks I'm talking about.

IDK.  It's possible that at least some of the kids celebrating may have had parents who died in the towers or on Flight 93.

Anywho...agree to disagree on the rest.  Big Smile

This is exactly what I thought about, Katie.  Often these sorts of things have a way of escalating things to a place we couldn't comprehend before.  Every time, in ever major war we think we're doing something that will bring about peace and it has the exact opposite effect.

I am no dove, I do believe in a strong military and clear goals - even if we have to use the CIA to accomplish them.  I am also a lover of history.  Because I majored in what I did, I have a completely useless degree in terms of practical application.  I do know alot about international reactions after acts of war - and no matter who committed them, they never turn out exactly as planned.

And because he's just so darned beautiful, I'm leaving the picture in the quote.

You know, if women were in charge and we all just shared pictures of Christopher Meloni, the world would SURELY be more peaceful and loving.

Haaaaa!  True dat! I also think the world would be a better place if people smoked more wacky tobaccy.  I mean, then the only conflict in the world would be who is making the next munchies run for Funyuns and Slurpees.

On the lighter side, if it didn't kill brain cells, I would be in 100% complete agreement.  Not that I know anything about that.

On the more serious side, my thoughts are with those who've been directly affected by this war.  We all have our "where were we at" stories.  I happened to be in Korea and have the air raid sirens go off and watch boys run, literally, back to their posts.  It was terrifying.  I was standing next to a girl who crumpled watching the footage, because her father worked in the WTC.  I'll never know if he survived.  But I didn't actually lose a family member. That brings a whole new level of pain.  So, I can't say I was directly affected.  And for the sake of those who were, I wish we would all find peace in the truth of our own religions - not a single of which doesn't preach harmony and unity (even if we've been brought up to believe some do not).

And maybe we wouldn't need that wacky tobaccy.  Maybe what we were looking for was right in front of our faces.

I would agree with you if there weren't a great many people who don't have (or want) a religion to fall back on.

That being said, I don't believe there is any way at all for extremists of any religion, race or culture to be able to look upon people of differing views with a rational eye.

That's where the weed comes in.  Even if they can't see the rational, they'll be too stoned to care.  Stick out tongue

I should have said "faith" or "belief" - we all have those, no matter who we are.  Even if our belief is that there is no higher power.  Even if our beliefs are evil - we all have them.

And I would guess that more people than not have a belief system that is good, even if they don't practice it.  If they didn't, the concept of karma or even hell would be dying ones.  There can be no good if one does not also believe in evil.  No ying for yang.  No "what comes around, goes around".  And those are pretty strong beliefs across the universe.  You get my drift.

And speaking of drifts...why is it that while no one admits to smoking it, everyone knows what it smells like.

  • Like KNemo said, there is sure to be something afoot after this. I am pretty sure the man wouldn't have led a resurgence for this long without having made some sort of death bed jihad. But, with Osama gone, so does most of the fortune backing the Al Qaeda. The hope now is that there isn't any more funding being syphoned off to the group and that it will lose steam.
