Vision question

Hello again, my dd is going to the eye dr tomorrow to check her eyes. However I am a nervou wreck about it. She looks around, and her eyes dialate. She very seldomly tracks and rarely will focus on one thing. Her eyes"look" normal but I am still really nervous that she may not see. Could her low muscle tone have anything to do with her eyes not focusing or tracking? Sorry if that's a stupid question but I am so anxious about tomorrows appointment. Thanks ladies you are wonderful!!

Re: Vision question

  • Does she have any neurological issues?  I remember that she had issues after birth, have they figured out what the problem was?

My son was deprived of oxygen in utero, and had a brain injury due to that. He has a diagnosis of cortical visual impairment.  This basically means that his eyes work, but his brain has trouble interpreting the signals the eyes send to the brain.  This is due to some damage to the vision center of the brain.  His vision has really improved with time, and I have been told that this condition can get better (depending on the child) as the brain creates new pathways to compensate for the brain injury.

The eye doctor should be able to give you some immediate information.  They can tell you a lot, even when they are babies.  Is she getting early intervention services?  We have a vision specialist through EI from the school from the blind that works with Carson.

I hope you get some good news. Keep us posted.

  • My hubby is an eye doctor and I also worked in the field (as an optician) for many years.  Do not be nervous.  Like the pp stated you should get alot of answers tomorrow.  You will probably be in the office for quite a long time so take enough stuff for the baby for a couple of hours.  I'm sure you are but I would make sure that you are seeing a pediatric ophthalmologist.

If it makes you feel any better my son was not tracking and would just stare at the ceiling (especially ceiling fans).  When we had our first evaluation from EI the evaluator thought that he might not be able to see properly.  We had a vision therapist come out (through EI) and after 2 sessions Landon was tracking and now looks at everything around him.

Thank you! She did not have any brain damage that we know of. We have to follow up with neurology in 3 months. Ei is coming to the house on Friday to start the process. I am Hoping her vision is just delayed like everything else has been. She's still nit smiling or holding her head up too well. I know it is all little things, but i am not too sure I can handle anymore bad news. Thanks for the encouraging words. I am anxious to see what the dr will tell is tomorrow!

  • my son didn't start smiling until he was between 3-4months old.  Actually the fact that he hadn't smiled by the time he was 2 months old was what prompted my pedi to send us for an MRI.  Now he smiles all the time (only had my hubby and myself).

I probably could have written your post.  I remember those days all too well.... I think I spent many days begging my 3month old to smile.  It was excrutiating.  I'm not sure what other "delays" you are noticing with your daughter but just be prepared for EI to give you the range of her delays.  I thought we were only dealing with not smiling or tracking but when EI came we soon realized that he was missing alot of milestones....... it was devastating at the time but my son has really made progress with help from physical therapy (through EI),

It has gotten better (for me) with time but there are still days when I just want to sit down and cry my eyes out.  Your story sounds so similiar to mine.  If you ever want to chat I can PM you my email address.  I know when I first started this journey (5months ago) I felt like there was no one with the same issues we were dealing with.

  • We are going to the eye dr tomorrow too.  She's not tracking at all, her eyes were super cloudy, after she was born and still aren't very clear.  She gets stuck cross eyed, quite a bit too.

She's not smiling and during tummy time her head is smushed down...I can't believe we are going through this again.  The pedi said we will give her a month of 'catch up' since she was a month early.  If she's not more 'normal' in a month, I may lose it.

I'm nervous about her appointment as well.  Peyton goes back in a few weeks for a 2nd opinion to see if she really does need glasses.

Lesley, your e mail would be great. It sounds like we are dealing with similar issues. The wye dr said everything look good as far as what the eye is suppose to look like. He did not do any further testing, he wants to wait a few months until she starts to track better or not track at all. Ge said her vision may be delayed like the rest of her. Once again we have to just wait and see (((sigh)))

  • My son has low tone and esotropia, along with farsightedness.

Low tone is a result of the brain not sending the right signal to the muscles, so it can definitely be related to eye movement issues.

DS will be having corrective surgery this month. The doctor will detach and move the muscles that are getting the erroneous signal from the brain, so they can't pull his eye out of whack when he is trying to look at something.

I am excited that there is a way to fix this neurological issue, since most things associated with tone are just things you have to work around.

I am not saying your LO has the same issue, but it may be a possibility to look in to.

    Good luck!
