fever even on meds

The boys both have fevers of 103.5.  That's even after piggybacking Tylenol and Motrin.  We put them both in the tub and now they are sleeping.  I am going to check their temp again in about 20-30 minutes.  At what point do I call the pedi?  I called earlier just to ask how often we can piggyback the meds but I didn't give our name or any details.  They had Motrin at 3:30 and Tylenol at 6:55.  At 8:20 they had temps of 103.5.  We put them in a lukewarm bath and in bed with only diapers on.  They have been in nothing but diapers for the last several hours but it doesn't seem to be helping.  Is there anything else we should be doing?

Re: fever even on meds

  • Charlotte just got through 4 days if fevers... So I feel your pain. I did the motrin/tylenol piggy backing as well. I was told that if the fever could not be controlled to 102 or under we should call and possibly need to be seen. I say if their fevers haven't dropped some when you go to check in 20 minutes, call the pedi. Good luck, fevers stink! Hope the handsome little guys feel better soon.

  • If it were me, I'd call just to see what they say. We had a similar situation this week. And of course I don't have a medical degree, but I'll tell you what the on-call nurse told me Smile

On Wednesday Alex went to the pedi, dx with an ear infection and a virus. His fever was around 103-104 most of the day. Around 10pm his fever spiked at 105.4 and I gave him some Tylenol. I called because the fever was so high. The on-call nurse said to undress him and wipe him down with a lukewarm cloth and check his temp again at 11pm. He was sleeping, which she said was a good sign. She said that if his fever had gone down even a little, that was good. At 11pm it was 104.4. When she called me back around 11:30, she said to give him Motrin again at 12:30a, even though I had given Tylenol at 10p. When I checked his temp again at 12:30, it was about 103 and stayed there most of the night. And she told me to call the pedi in the morning.

I know that might not help you much. But I figured I'd pass it along, since I think fevers are scary and I never know what to do! But I'd call, just to give yourself some piece of mind. I hope the fevers go down soon.

  • Man, after re-reading my post I realized I forgot to tell you what I wore that day, and everything I ate..... Obviously I don't know the meaning of short and sweet!

Holy crap!  That is so high!  I hope he is feeling better now.  I admire your restraint because I might have loaded the boys up and headed straight to ER even if it wasn't needed Stick out tongue

Man, after re-reading my post I realized I forgot to tell you what I wore that day, and everything I ate..... Obviously I don't know the meaning of short and sweet!

I appreciate it all!  I tend to overreact and appreciate knowing that even higher temps don't necessarily need to be seen.  I just took their temp again and they are at 102.  Looks like the bath did some good.  I'm sure I'll be up every couple of hours checking their temps just to make sure.  I'm a nervous nelly, what can I say.

I tend to overreact too, which is why we've been at the pedi's 2x in the past few days. I was ready to go to the ER and about in tears. But the on-call nurse really helped calm me down. And once I realized the fever was actually going down, I felt a little better. I'm glad the fevers are going down, even if it's just a little. I hope they sleep tonight, and feel better in the morning!
