Bedtime routine

DD is 12 weeks tomorrow and we have a little routine- feed, change diaper, put pjs on, swaddle and rock to sleep. We have been doing this around 8:30-9 and she's sleeping in her crib by 10 at the latest. I was reading in a magazine to put 3 month olds to bed by 5-7pm. This seems outeagrously early especially since we don't even pick her up from daycare until 5:30. I want to spend time with my little girl! What are your routines and what time did you put your three month olds to bed?

Re: Bedtime routine

  • I think around 3 months our dd was going to between 8-9pm. Her bedtime has crept up as she gets older and now goes to bed around 7:30-8pm and gets up at 8am. What time does she get up in the morning? If she has to get up at 6:30-7am I may try to put her to bed a little earlier so she could sleep for 10-12 hours. It's so hard to get them in much of a schedule at that age though- IMO.

  • We were doing very similar times at that age.  You could probably start moving that routine a bit earlier.  We found that DS slept more and better once we moved his bedtime earlier.  We now start the routine around 7/7:30 and he is almost always asleep before 8.

I know it's hard because you want to spend as much time with her as possible, so do what works for you and your daughter.  Just make sure she is getting enough sleep.

  • My DD was going down between 9-10p at that age. When I was on mat. leave she went to bed at 11p.  As she got older she moved her bedtime earlier and earlier and now goes down at 8:30p.  I just made sure she was getting 12-14 hours a night and she does that no problem.

  • Like PP said...do what works for you.

Oliver is 3 months and 2 weeks and for about the past 4 weeks..he goes down sometime between 5-7, and will sleep until 5AM (BUT still gets up every 2 - 2 1/2 hours to eat...little piggy). I actually hadn't read that about 3 month olds (even though I was reading that Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child book)...and it sucks because I get home at 3:30...DH is a stay at home dad....and we tried to stretch him later...but he doesn't want too. We figure this is payback (in a good way); Oliver was extremely alert as a NB..and literally didn't sleep AT ALL. So, maybe he's making up for it?

I don't think there is a wrong answer-but yes, if there is a daycare issue-then you probably need to adjust - so that you can get LO up, ready, etc. and still get a decent amt of sleep...

  • Is it sad I can't even remember at that age and it was only 2 months ago?

Our LO now goes to bed at 6:30, but that's new. He was going down at 7:30 for a while.

I'm pretty sure at that age, he would go to "bed" in the wrap and then we'd put him in the cradle when we'd go to sleep around 10:30 or 11.

  • I cannot remember when Aubriana went down at 3 months old, but her routine now is this:

Non-bath night: 7:45pm get PJs on, brush teeth, read 2-3 books, snuggle for a few min with her lovey and mommy or daddy and then lay down drowsy. She is typically out within 10 mins.

Bath-night: 7:30pm start and give bath and pick up normal routine at 7:45pm.

When your baby gets older, I would suggest (by no means trying to tell you what to do!) stopping the rocking to sleep and then laying down because they will become dependent on you rocking them to sleep... So when they wake up and realize they're not in your arms anymore, you get a crying baby who needs you again to put them to sleep, rather than them learning to do it on their own. I imagine this would work better when your baby's older and is in more of a solid routine, but it has made a difference for us! We were rocking Aubri to sleep before putting her down and she was CONSTANTLY getting up -- not hungry, but because she woke up and we weren't still holding her. But again, that's only a friendly suggestion and above all, do what works best for you and your family! Smile

  • Our son has never had a "bedtime" earlier than 8pm because like you said we wanted to spend some time with him in the evenings.  When he was really little he would doze off for 1/2 hour between coming home from daycare and going down for the night but that phased out on it's own.  I think at three months he was probably going down around 9:00, moved it back to 8:00 as he got older.  It also was nice to put him down later as then I would go to bed around 10-11 and get a few hours of sleep before he woke up for a feeding.
