excessive thirst? (100 oz in a day!)

I drank about 100 oz of fluid yesterday. Isn't that crazy?! Is this a sign of something? do i need to be worried? I was still thirsty, just tired of peeing every 20 minutes so i forced myself to go to bed. Any thoughts?

Re: excessive thirst? (100 oz in a day!)

  • I was just noticing this! I was drinking water like crazy the first 8 or 9 weeks and then dropped off. I am back to it again! I have to wake up in the middle of the night to drink water, or I wake up parched. I'm drinking 2 42 oz sparkling waters from Tj's a day...plus whatever else I normally drink!

  • One of the ways to measure how much water you should drink is by following the 1/2 oz per lb rule. Ex: If you weigh 120 lbs you should drink 60 oz a day. 100oz does seem a lot, especially because every time you urinate not only do you flush out the water but also vital nutrients, electrolytes, etc. You should ask your doctor about this.

  • If I recall correctly, water intake is important during the second trimester, because it is replenishing the amniotic fluid for the baby. Or something like that. Whatever it is, there's a reason for it.....

    That's really helpful! Thanks...

OP, is it getting warmer where you are? We've been nice and hot here, until this weekend, so that might play into it as well.

  • I wish I could just get through the 64oz my Dr wants me to drink!

  • If it continues, you might just want to check with your doctor...I know it can be a sign of your thyroid acting up which sometimes happens during pregnancy.

But my nutritionist has me on 80-96 oz a day (10-12 cups) so I don't think 100 is so so so much!

  • While it's true that they recommend you drink a cup of water an hour to "replenish" your amniotic fluid, I think at barely 13 weeks you shouldn't feel a need to drink 100 oz a day. Also remember that fluids only serve as the transportation system for the body. Perhaps it's the lack of proper nutrients that are facilitating the thirst, and not dehydration.

  • P.S. Don't forget you also get water from the foods you eat!

  • I, too, was drinking water or plain drinking early on, then it dropped off and now I am so thirsty again.  I think I've peed about 20 times today.  I could have gulped the entire bottle of OJ and I've drank 5 bottled waters and a Coke today.  So you're not alone.  I notice I drink less on the week days because I teach and can't technically go whenever I want.  On the weekends, I can.

  • i've been drinking 8 16oz cups (128 oz total) of water a day for at least two weeks. i go to bed thirsty pee in the middle of the night and wake up thirsty. I'm constantly drinking water. I didn't think it was that weird because i normally drink about 6 16 oz cups (96 oz total) of water a day when i'm not pregnant.

I've also been crazy thirsty lately. I haven't been keeping track of how much water I've been drinking but I have a cup from mcd's from their giant sweet tea and i fill it with water about 7 times a day and through the night I drink 2 more. I'd be drinking more but my stomach gets all sloshy feeling. It isn't fun. Even when I don't think I can hold anymore water and feel sick from drinking so much I'm still so thirsty. I don't know why but I'm sure if my body wants me to drink this much then I must need it. I used to get bad dehydration migranes before I realized that all beverage does not = hydration. So now I just let the body do what it wants.

That was me up until about a week and a half ago. I'm still thirsty, but I'm not drinking gallons anymore.

From weeks 6-11 I never felt fully hydrated. One night I checked the clock every time I got up to pee, and I was having to go every hour on the dot.

I'm just about to hit 13 weeks, and the drinking and peeing have leveled off a bit for the moment.

Everyone I've talked to says it's completely normal.

REALLY excessive thirst is also a sign of GD.  My neighbor didn't know she had it and was drinking ridic. amounts.....constantly.  To the point that people were noticing her excessive drinking.  Her docs messed up BIG time with her GD results but that's a whole other story....you know your body best, if you think something doesn't feel right, talk to your doc.  I know we are ALL really thirsty, but 100 oz seems crazy thirsty to me!

  • I really do not see 100 oz. as being a lot....maybe I'm crazy! Let's say you are terribly unhealthy and you drink a 20 oz soda at/around each meal....that's quickly 60 oz. It's not much more to drink 40 more oz to consume 100 oz of liquid.

Plus, the weather is changing....we are in a dry climate, so my water intake always rises in the spring and summer. Are others noticing this too?

  • I've been really thirsty over the past week, to the point where I'd guess I am drinking 100 oz a day of fluids, although not all of that is water.  For the first few weeks after my BFP, I couldn't get enough to drink.  I was always thirsty.  My thirst calmed down from about weekns 6-12 and seems to be on the upswing again now.  From the replies, this seems to be pretty normal.

I have always consumed a crap-ton of water (at many times double what you are).  Since I was like that pre-pregnancy I just continued to drink what my body wanted.  I did have fasting blood work done at the beginning of my pregnancy (routine physical) and I was told to cut way back because that much water is actually making my soduim levels extremely low.
