VBAC

Advice needed

I need some advice about whether or not to do a VBAC for my next pregnancy.

So I just had my first child 3 months ago, and I was almost 41 weeks when they induced me.  I wasn't dilated and about 50% effaced.  4 days before my induction, they kept me 8 hours on Sat, and 8 hours on Sun, and gave me 4 doses of Cytotec to try and get me softened up.  Then I went in Wed night and got Cervadil, and started pitocin 12 hours later.  After about 2 hours on pitocin I started having contractions that I couldn't really feel (just felt a little tight on the top).  They had to turn the pitocin down because I was having contractions too close together, but they weren't doing anything.  After 4 hours of pitocin I was barely 1cm and still not really feeling the contractions, so we decided to do a c-section.  I was disappointed, but glad to finally have my daughter.

I had really wanted a natural birth and feel like I got jipped, and have been thinking about doing a VBAC whenever we decided to have baby #2 (a couple years down the road).  The hospital I went to doesn't do VBAC's, but another one that's just as close does.  Can anyone tell me their experience and what they think about it?

  • I haven't had a VBAC yet but am considering it for this pregnancy.  My c-section with my son was b/c he was breech so I should have a good chance if I decide to try to VBAC.

Now with your situation, it sounds like you had a failed induction.  You were never in labor.  So if you want to try  a VBAC you should have a good chance - especially if you go into labor on your own.  It seems like there is beginning to be a push for more and more VBACs, so hopefully by the time you are conceiving, the hospital of your choice will allow them.  If not, I would meet with an OB from the other hospital and get their opinion.

  • I agree, it sounds like you had a failed induction.  I'm sorry!  I had a failed induction turned c-section at 41 weeks as well, so I can relate to your feelings of being jipped.

I imagine that with a supportive provider and the option of waiting for spontaneous labor, you have great odds of VBAC!  There are some good posts here about "what questions to ask OB/midwife about VBAC" that you might read before you set up an appt with a potential provider.  Good thing is you have lots of time to read up and find someone who will support you when you're ready for another baby.

I am planning my VBAC at a certified nurse midwife run birth center.  Something else to consider if you have a birth center/midwives in your area.
