Thought I was over this stress!

K decided she's a stomach sleeper.  Now granted, most kids do this months earlier.  K is 11 months old.  I know I have nothing to worry about.  But it's freaking me out.  She figured out how to grab the bars of the crib, pull and flex her abs so she can swing her brace and legs out of the boppy and get on her tummy.  [We keep a boppy wrapped around her bottom half to support her legs, as they dangle in the air when she sleeps on her back due to the brace]

Last night she fought sleep until she got on her tummy; but this makes her brace dig into her back.  We had to roll up a towel and put it under her lower abdomen to keep the angle right, and she shimmed off it in the middle of the night and woke up.  Ugh.   She wouldn't do it if it hurt that much, right?  Maybe we should just let her sleep without any support, but then I'd be afraid she'd get a big welt from the brace.

Re: Thought I was over this stress!

  • It sounds like she's comfortable on her tummy, and she's mobile enough to move around if she needs to make a change.  I'd let her do her thing.   My kids are both tummy sleepers, and so am I.  :)

  • Could you fold up a washcloth or something to put between her brace and her back so it doesn't dig in as much?

  • ditto both of what Jill said!   Sorry she's being so difficult for ya!

  • What Jill said. I always figure if they're not fussing about it then it's probably bothering me more than it's bothering them. This is such a hard age isn't? Sarah's going through the same stuff (but of course without the added stress of a brace). Good luck with the sleep!
  • Thanks for the tip, I think I'll try that tonight.  I could probably fold up a small cloth and tuck it in there, as long as she's sleepy enough when I do it :)

I just have to remind myself, sleep issues suck but it'll get better!  [for a while, then I'm sure it'll spiral downward again - ha]

I agree with the others.  That sucks, J.  All my kids are tummy sleepers, too.  I put them back-to-sleep and they flip over immediately.  My Katie sleeps with her shoes up by her ears.  Her bar resting on her forehead.  Sometimes she will sleep in a sitting position with her head on her bar.  I figure if she is comfortable, then I'll let her do her thing :)

  • I hate worrying about my kids....it's just terrible :(

We obviously don't have a brace to worry about, but Madelyn will sleep in the most bizarre positions.  I used to keep myself up at night trying to keep her in a position I thought she'd like better...and the only person that suffered was me.  So unless she's dangling out of her crib, I just let her be.
