@ 32 weeks estimating baby to be 4.8lbs, take nb clothes back?

I had a growth u/s yesterday due to having GD and they're estimating baby at 4.8lbs (which if I recall correctly the tech said was a little big but still okay) based on this and having 8 weeks to go would you exchange the nb stuff you got for 0-3 months at this point?  I do have another u/s in 3 weeks to follow up on a health concern with the baby but I'm not sure if they'll tell me how much they think he weighs at that point.

  • and was anyone else told that 4.8lbs is a little big at this point?  My baby center update says baby is 3.75lbs but the ticker on here says a little over 4lbs...

  • i had my growth U/S on Wednesday (at 32W) and they told me she was 4 lbs 9 oz. On the growth chart, they said that would put her around 8 lbs when she was born. He said it was the 55%, so it doesnt sound like yours is much ahead of that?

I'm keeping the newborn stuff, but I'm pretty sure I'll only be able to use it for a week or two. :( I just couldnt resist getting at least a few things though because they are so precious and tiny!)

  • I would hold off.  Those measurements aren't exactly accurate.  I had an appt at 32 weeks to check on my placenta and the u/s tech said that the baby was 4 lbs 8 oz.  Our ob felt around and said that she wasn't that big, but would definitely be doubling in size between 32 weeks &  my due date.

  • i had my first son at 33 weeks and he was 4lb 6 oz. they said if he had gone full turm he would have been around 8 lb so useing that as a guide i would guess that your bub could still be a lot shy of 9 lb born so you will still need NB clothes for a little while. I would just leave the tags on and exchange after birth if needed

  • The measurements are just estimates; they can be off. I know a few people who were estimated to have big babies at this point, and they arrived near their due dates at 6 or 7 lbs. I wouldn't return all the NB stuff just yet; keep the tags on them but hold on to them in case.

I agree w/ this poster. They can be wrong. My OB even told me on Wednesday they could be a whole pound to 2 pounds off.

  • I wouldn't take it back, weight estimations can be way off. DS2 was estimated at 8 1/2 pounds a week before I gave birth and came out at 8 pounds, and still wore the NB stuff for almost a month (even though most Nb stuff says up to 7 pounds).  I know it doesn't sound like long, but it was totally worth having clothes that "fit" and didn't fall off him those first few weeks home.

  • At 34 weeks my baby was estimated to be 6 pounds, 1 ounce and the tech said at this rate we will have over a 9 pound baby.  Because they can be off with measurements I will be keeping all the newborn stuff until he's here and I see for myself (although with 4 u/s measuring big, I do think we will have a big baby!)

  • What everyone else said AND you don't know exactly when baby will be born - given the "estimate" in EDD. I suspect if LO comes at 37 weeks you'll get at least a few weeks of use.
  • No I wouldn't take anything back.  My son was born exactly at 37 weeks (so considered "full term") but only weighed 6 pounds 3 oz so he wore newborn sized clothes for a few months.

  • agree with everyone!

My babes measured at 32 weeks, 2 days at 4 pounds, 11 ounces (last week) and I was told this was the 54%.

I'm completely happy with her weight - her newborn clothes are washed and ready for wearing! :)

  • at about 31 weeks, i was told my LO was over 4 pounds already.  as a result, i did not buy a lot of newborn clothes, i bought mostly 0-3 and 3-6.  That said, I have no problem sending my mother out to buy more clothes when she is born depending on her weight.

this exactly, it's not so much that nb size clothes are small, but really 0-3mos clothes are just quite big on a nb. the neck and leg holes are usually too large, they're too loose, etc

i'd hold onto your clothes until the baby gets here

  • I had one at 29 weeks and was told baby was almost 4lbs. I have another set up for May 4th (I will be 35w) to see how he is chubbing up! LOL

I do know that I was estimated to have babies over 9lbs with BOTH pregnancy #1 and #2 in the past and they came out at 7-5 & 7-10! TINY!

HOWEVER, Every doctor I see now, and even with feeling baby inside me, I KNOW he is going to be the biggest! LOL He fills my whole gutt and that is major since I am plus size. =)

  • I had an u/s yesterday @ 32 weeks.  They are estimating 4 pounds 10 oz.  I am not worried about returning clothes.  First of all, this isn't an exact science.  Also, you will still need the clothes for a few weeks.  :) Besides, like PP said - they are just too cute to return!  :)

  • I ask mainly because the coming home outfit I want to use is nb. So I guess I should just take tags off and wash it just in case and have a back up ready to go too. Who knows when or what our delivery will be like now that they think something is wrong with one of his kidneys. I just want him healthy!

  • oh yeah, i'd definitely take your coming home outfit, and a back up just in case!

also, some babies lose a bit of their birth weight in the hospital and in the first couple days

Yep.  My SIL who just had her baby was told her baby was going to be a 8 or 9 pounder.  She had her c-section and he was only 5lbs 14oz!  I think sometimes they get a little carried away and judge by your weight gain.  She gained a lot.

  • I would hold off on taking it back. DS was 7lbs 15oz and fit into newborn clothes for a few weeks.....There may be a chance that the baby could still fit!
  • I'm quite certain they aren't judging ds's size by my weight gain.  I haven't gained much at this point.  They did a growth u/s yesterday and estimated 4.8lbs based on the measurements from that.
