Babies: 0 - 3 Months

what am i missing?!?

i usually prepare my LO's formula in the medela breast milk bottles because they have the lids and it's easier to refrigerate the extra if needed.  i first pour the water to the 4 oz line then add the 2 scoops of powder and lastly i transfer what i need into our avent bottles for feeding.  well for what ever reason today i decided to measure the water in my glass pyrex measuring cup and when i poured the water into the bottle it was a 1/2 ounce off according to the measurement line on the bottles.  why is my measuring cup measuring 4 ounces of water but my bottles, both avent & medela, measuring 3.5oz?!?

am i totally having a blonde moment here?!?

what measurement should i be going by, the bottle's 4 oz line or my measuring cup?

  • I'm not sure why it would be different, but I would definitely rely on the bottle's measurement.

  • well I use RTF...and I had the same problem with DD1.  I put it in the bottle to 4 oz but in my pyrex it was off.

I actually poured all 32 ounces in and measured and it didnt come out to be 32 ounces.  It made me nuts.  I use ready to feed so measuring isnt that big of a deal, but I noticed it too.

What i would do is do it with water and see what happens.  I have no idea about the medela bottles, I use drop ins so I just assumed they were off by a little bit.

  • From a scientific background, containers with less graduations on them are usually less reliable.  I'd trust whichever one breaks down the measurements the farthest.  Also, it doesn't explain an entire 1/2oz, but some could have to do with residual water left in the measuring cup.

  • The medela bottles are definitely not accurate--at least in my experience...neither are the glass Dr. Brown's bottles.  I agree with the post about the more gradations, the more accurate.
