Setting up the nursery for new baby (due in June) and as I was researching baby monitors, it occurred to me that I may as well look into using a wireless IP camera (which in some cases cost much less than the high end video baby monitors, and have significantly more functionality).
Wireless cams run between $65 - $125 {see top 10 reviews at: https://wireless-camera-review.toptenreviews.com/ }
High-end baby monitors run $85-$200 { see top 10 reviews at: https://baby-video-monitor-review.toptenreviews.com/ }
I really like the thought that DH could log in (securely) from work to view the baby, and we can log in from our Droids as well as allowing far away grandparents to log in and see baby.
It also doubles as a nanny cam & home security system.
Just wondered if there are any other high-tech mommies out there that took this route and what your experience has been with it.
Re: Anyone Using a Wireless IP Camera Instead of Baby Monitor
We're thinking about doing this route as well, but it's just a thought for us right now as we still haven't really looked into it yet. So I'm also curious to see how it's worked for others.
We found video baby monitors from Target that were around $150 but I think for the price of installing wireless cams that can double as nanny cams, security systems, etc...it ends up being a MUCH better deal. It's such a great idea!
We did. We got a Foscam Wireless IP camera with LED infrared night vision for ~$90 on Amazon. You can get a Foscam app for iPhone so that you can use your iPhone as a receiver so that's what we did.
Total cost - $90 for camera + $10 for the app for myself and my husband = $100.
we have one - we got a mole from costco. the camera was about $100. dh and i can each view it from our phone - iphone and eevo - using our web browsers. i even watch it from work in the mornings when dh get's the baby up to get ready.
we really love this option. in fact, i have the camera up now, docked in a small window, watch the baby sleep upstairs. we almost always have our phones or computers near us, so it's pretty versatile.
while our camera can be used wirelessly, we had some issues with our particular router in getting it to work. something about the portal it was looking for and the portals our router had open. so we use a wireless bridge, which i think makes it a faster, slightly more stable connection.
So, all you do is buy the camera and buy the app for your iPhone? How easy is it to "install"? I know nothing about this.
So, you can see AND hear the baby? I might have to look more into this.
This is the setup we currently have, the camera is wireless and cost > $100, great night vision, and all we did was add a small microphone for sound. It's nice to not have to worry about other people picking up our signal -- everything is encrypted and secure.
We have apps on our phones to view her at any time, and as mentioned, husband can see her when he's at work if he wants. We also have google tv and are waiting for the marketplace to open so we can get an IP cam viewer app for it and be able to do picture-in-picture of the monitor as well, which would be pretty cool.
