Walking/Running advice?

One of my little ones looks like he going to start walking any day now and I am sure the other won't be far behind. I am wondering how am I going to be able to keep up with them, especially when they start running or they go in opposite directions. I am most concerned when we take them out in public. I guess I am worried about them getting away from me or something.

I am assuming we will still have them in the stroller most of the time. I don't know.

Any words of advice or tips anyone want to pass along?

  • Stroller all the way. I don't ever let my toddler walk when we are out and about because he would be gone!

  • If I am by myself, we use the stroller. The only time I don't is when we are walking into the gym and I hold each hand and throw the diaper bag around my neck.

A few weekends ago we went down to the park for Easter pictures and DH and I were having to go in opposite directions to chase kids. Not something I want to do by myself. I laugh at the people that put leashes on their kids, but I have joked about getting 2 of them.

  • Both of mine are walking and one is running. I try to give them as much freedom to walk and explore as safety allows.

Yesterday, Evelyn had a doctor's appointment. I put Audrey in the single stroller and let Evelyn walk holding my hand. Once in the exam room, I let them both roam. I pretty much let them walk around when the area is small (children's section of library, a small store, etc.) Today, I took them both for a walk around my neighborhood without a stroller by myself. They did awesome! My DH and I took them for a walk the other day and taught them to stay on the sidewalk and today they remembered! We live in a very quiet neighborhood though. I wouldn't try it near busy roads.

I'm actively working on teaching them "Hold Mommy's hand" and "Stop" and "stay."  I do have a backpack leash, but haven't had to use it yet :) I use the double stroller when I'm alone someplace busy or large.

  • I was reading someone's multiples blog and they said that from the very beginning that it was just expected that their kids would always be in a stroller or cart in a store.  Never walking around.  That way the expectation would always be that they are riding in something when out and about.  They would not let them walk around, because of the difficulty of keeping track of them (she had 3).  I thought this was a good idea.  I have a friend who let her baby walk in the stores as soon as she could. Now she SCREAMS the whole time she is in a stroller or cart.  I have a fear of that happening, So while they are little we will be in the stroller a lot...not that that is always going to work for us :)

  • I set expectations early with my girls.  If we were out and it was just me, they were in the stroller or a cart.  If they were walking, they needed to hold onto my hand.  If they didn't listen, back in the stroller.
