?'s for those of you who use Mirena

I'm on day 19 of AF.  19 days people.

I had the Mirena put in yesterday, and obviously it's not going to instantly stop/regulate AF, but my GYN says it can take a few months to sort of kick in and regulate things.

What was your experience with that?  As far as going back to regularly spaced out periods and regular length periods?

Not that anyone asked but I didn't feel a think when it was inserted.  I don't know what that says about the state of affairs "down there" but all I did was take 4 Motrin ahead of time.  When the GYN was down there messing about she says to me "are you OK?" and I say "yeah, let me know when you put it in" and she says "I already did."  I totally thought it would hurt.  I guess having three kids has its advantages!

Re: ?'s for those of you who use Mirena

  • it was probably the motrin! i had a paragard after T. i took a tylenol an hour before and had mild cramping. i had another paragard after A. i didn't take anything this time and barely felt anything after my cervix was placed properly (um, yeah, that hurt like a B!). definitely having kids helps that discomfort!

hope the bleeding stops! i didn't want to do hormonal BC, but the paragard extends my time by a week (so, a total of 10 days of either bleeding or spotting) for the first 6 months or so. bummer.

  • I have no experience with Mirena but wanted to say that a 19 day AF is proof that God is not a woman.  So sorry.  Hope the easy insertion is a foreshadowing of it being a positive experience.

  • I had the Mirena inserted about 9 weeks post delivery.  This is probably going to be TMI, but, here goes.  A few days after insertion, I got some heavy spotting/light flow, which may or may not have been my first period ppd.  I think stuff was just completely flushing out.  I am still having some pinkish/brownish discharge, and from what I've read, it could last for a little while just as it all clears out.  The other thing I have noticed is that I have a lot more discharge than normal pre-pregnancy.  But again, I've read that it's normal.

I hope your AF stops or at least slows down and tapers off with Mirena!

I took 600 mg of ibuprophen pre-insertion, and hardly felt a thing.  Some mild cramping afterwards.  Most uncomfortable was the strings!  I had to go get them trimmed the next day because I was getting poked whenever I moved or sat down!

  • I'm about 2 years into having a Mirena and have had a positive experience. My bleeding post-insertion probably lasted about 4 weeks, so your experience sounds about right. On the upside, I haven't had any more than spotting since then, so for all intents and purposes, no real AF since having it inserted. That has been one of the nicest perks for me. So, my advice is to hang in there, that sounds normal to me, and it will more than make up for itself in the years to come!
