Baby Names

Ari

Thoughts on this name?  It's growing on me for a boy - although I feel like I have to specify it is a boy name and that bothers me a bit.

Re: Ari

  • I went to HS with an Ari.  I love the name. I don't think you would have to specify if its a boy's name or not
  • Too feminine for me. Plus it is a popular nn for Ariana/Arianna
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

I always thought it was short for Aristotle (boys). Maybe that' sjust my imagination, though. I never heard it used as a nn for a girl. Interesting.

  • I think it is obviously a boy name, but I live in a Jewish area and it is a pretty common Jewish boy name so I've known a few of them, including my cousin's ds.  I really like it.
  • I like the name, but I'm not Jewish so I'd feel weird using it.

  • I met a toddler boy named Ari. I don't know if it was short for anything.  The only draw back I see is that they had to keep correcting people that called him"Artie".  I have heard it used as a NN for Ariana and Ariadne.

  • I like it as a nn, but it isn't substantial enough to be a full fn, imho.

  • I like it, but sounds very Jewish to me, which might be strange if you're not. If it's not an issue for you, then go for it.
  • I LOVE Ari. I think its really great just by itself.
  • My husband loves the name and it was in his top 3, but I just couldn't get it into it. No specific reason, it just didn't grow on me.

  • I love this name, but I've always felt it's great if you're Jewish and kind of pretentious if you're not. (This is my feeling on a lot of non-English names. I love "Diego," but as I am not Spanish I'll never give that name to a son...)

Thanks for all the feedback!  One of the reasons I like it is because it is short and (IMO) ethnically diverse.  Our children will be biracial and have a very long last name so I think Ari could work well.

I know a girl called Ari, short for Ariadne. So yea, its too feminine in my opinion for a boy.

This. I live in a very Jewish area so it's normal to see men named Ari and Ariel but if it's not normal where you live I wouldn't do it.

  • I love that name, but my fiance says it reminds him of Entourage (one of our favorite shows). Maybe other people might relate it to that also, but I like it!

  • LOVE it!

I love the combined meaning in both Hebrew (Lion), and Old Norse (Eagle). It makes me view this name as quite regal. Yet it's so short, that it almost seems humble and unassuming.
