help - won't sleep in cradle!

My LO is  5 weeks old and I can't get her to sleep in her cradle. She has slept in there maybe a total of 5 times since she has been home. Most of the time she sleeps in the swing or the bouncy chair while I sleep on the couch. I've tried swaddling and not swaddling. As soon as I put her down in the cradle, she moves her arms around and kicks her feet. It doesn't completely wake her up but I can't sleep with her making noise and if I wait long enough, she starts fussing.

I think that it may have to do with the mattress in the cradle; the cradle is old (my parents used it with me) so they had a new mattress custom made and it is pretty hard. I tried to put a few small blankets over the mattress (but under the sheet) and that hasn't worked.

Has anyone else had this problem? We had this problem with my older daughter and we just moved her into her crib but we can't this time since she is still using the crib (it is one of the convertible ones) and we dont' have room to add another. What are some things that you have tried or any ideas that you have? I can't take sleeping on the couch anymore!

What about trying the rock in play. If it does not work return it. I know a lot of moms who swear by it. We had this problem with both kids and once we moved them to the crib they were fine.
