My DD got the first airport set when she was two. She played with it somewhat but not a whole lot. When DS was born, we had every toy in the world from my DD so it was hard for people to buy him age appropriate gifts, since we already had everything. So I asked people to add to the Geotrax set, knowing it would be more fun to play with when he was older.
My son just turned 2yo and he is not capable of playing with the set on his own (he can join the tracks together but he can't lay them out in a configuration so that the ends meet up) but he BEGS us to build tracks for him. I would say he plays with it 5 out of 7 days. And honestly, what he really like to do is stand on the tracks so that the trains run into his feet. My DD is now 5 and she is really interested in building intricate track configurations but she has no interest in watching the trains go around. So it works out well for us, my 5 yo builds the tracks and then my 2yo watches the trains go around for hours.
ETA: I'm not sure if you are wondering if now is a good time to start a set for your son. I would say that if your son likes trains or anything to do with transportation (my son is obsessed with planes, trains and automobiles) then the sooner the better to start a set. I always knew a toy like this wouldn't be much fun until we accumulated at least 5-6 sets. So we started at DS's first X-mas, when he was 9mos old. So now that he is 2, and we have had afew birthdays and Christmases, he has quite a few pieces that make it really fun.
My oldest DS got it a set when he was 3 I think, so my youngest was around 2 and both of them played with it, my oldest one doesn't play with them much anymore but my almost 4yo still enjoys them.

We have the Grand Central Station one and he got it at 2yo and he is now over 4 and plays with it once every 6 mos or so, if I leave it out it will be stepped over. I was trying to figure out if anyone's DC started playing with it older, sounds like the answer is no. We also have the airport and same thing. I cannot get more sets b/c I will have no space for them. I still have all the wooden Thomas stuff and a Thomas Trackmaster set and none of it is used unless my Godson comes over and then DS wants to play with it b/c GS is a Thomas fanatic. And DS wants me to keep all the Little People with cars but he never plays with that either.
