I am going to a baby sale soon that is at a local church and was wondering whether anyone knows whether I would just be out of luck if I purchase a used item and there is a recall, or does the company somewhow still honor it? I would assume they use the contact info from the product registration card you get when first buying something, so I'm not sure how they would honor the recall without my info & proof of purchase.
It's definitely not worth sacrificing safety for saving a few bucks, so I wanted to check with you all.
Thanks for your help!
Re: Recalls on items purchased used
Interesting question. I would think the company by law has to help you out if there is a recall - regardless whether you are the original owner of the item or not. If they don't honor it, they're potentially putting a child at risk. The main issue here - is like what you say - that you may not be easily notified about recalls since you're not the original owner. There's a website that you can sign up for recall notices - the address escapes me at the moment, someone else hopefully can you help you there. Also - I wonder if maybe you could just sign up online at each individual company's websites and enter in the serial numbers of what you get anyway and see it'll let you update the contact info. For example, let's say you got a fisher price item - just go the product registration website and enter in the info. The serial numbers will be on the products.
But please do not buy a used car seat or base. You have no guarantee of the history of it and is considered a very unsafe idea.
Here is that website I mentioned that you can sign up to an e-mail list that sends you messages on anything recalled that is child product related:

Maybe this site may be helpful to you as well since you are purchasing some used items:
