Dairy Allergy questions

OK - we *think* Baby N is allergic to dairy.  We knew she had an intolerance but we are now thinking it might be an allergy after her reaction to having it (horrible eczema, diaper rash and noticing a pattern of her getting worse after having small amounts of dairy foods). We aren't 100% sure though and are going to wait a couple more weeks for her system to clear before we try tomatoes again to see how she reacts. But overall, we are fairly certain it's the dairy and not the tomatoes.

If your kiddo does have an allergy to dairy, what were the symptoms? How long does it take for the symptoms to show up? How did you know for certain it was dairy? Did you get it diagnosed officially? Have they shown any signs of growing out of it? What do you do for milk and vitamin D?

We've had a hard time trying to figure this out so any thoughts/advice are definitely welcome.

Re: Dairy Allergy questions

  • M had a severe reaction to dairy when she was first born - so much so that she had to be put on perscription Elecare formula for her first months.

Was your kiddo formula fed? If it was a dairy allergy you would have seen it with the formula, as it is based on dairy.

If you breastfed instead, but you consumed dairy while breastfeeding, the same reaction would happen.

Did your LO ever have a reaction when on the bottle/breast? If not, I would think that it might be something other than dairy.

  • also i should add that m grew out of it, and can now have dairy.

i do know that tomatoes can cause severe reactions in people - not saying that is what it was or not though.

  • M doesn't have an allergy, just a sensitivity.  He can't have milk or ice cream, but can have cheese and yogurt (I had to follow this when I nursed too).  He had two bowls of ice cream at school a couple of weeks ago and was the crankiest he'd been in ages.  He gets eczema and it will upset his stomach.  This is something that runs in the men in my family, so I wasn't surprised he had issues.  I hope he'll grow out of it but hasn't yet.  My nephews all out grew it within a few years, but my brother still doesn't drink much milk or eat ice cream.

We give him almond milk.  We started with the vanilla flavored, which has more sugar than I'd like, so if you go that direction I'd start with the orginial or unsweetened and see if she'll drink that first.

She's been breastfed. As of 2 weeks ago, she gets 1 bottle of formula a day (since I can't keep up anymore).  I had to cut all dairy out of my diet when she was 2 months old b/c she had horrible reflux.  Within a week we went from 2 meds, 4 times a day to 1 med, 2x per day.  It was a huge difference. I've been off dairy since then.

Our pedi told us at her 9 month appt to introduce dairy and see how she did. We gave her yogurt 1x per day for 4 days and thought she was ok. (This was all before formula).   However, as we continued to give her dairy (cheese, foods made w/ dairy), she started getting worse. Once she got formula - her skin was awful.  Totally broken out and red.  It would get better at night (not 100% but better) after Benadryl and then by the time we pick her up from daycare, she'd be inflamed and red again and irritable.  I know it takes a while for dairy to leave your system. We cut all dairy back out of her diet over a week ago and finally saw improvement early this week.

She's not had tomatoes in over 3+ weeks now which is why I don't think it's tomatoes since we were still having issues late last week.

  • Should have mentioned we used soy formula and he had no issues with that.  Regular formula = eczema.
  • I'm pretty sure Brady has a problem with cow's milk.  I don't think he has a broad problem with dairy though because I can eat goat's milk products and I gave him some goat's milk with his formula the last couple of weeks when I had to give him formula because I felt bad for him having to drink that stuff that smells horrible and the can says it doesn't taste like milk!  I've really only noticed that he seems to have mainly eczema on his face show up and also his poopy diapers aren't as frequent as I think they should be, but he doesn't show true signs of constipation (straining and hard poop)  Anyway, I also think he has pretty broad nut allergy, so I've gone off of all nuts as well.  I know what we are going through isn't really the same, but I just wanted to put it out there.  I guess you might want to try goat's milk if you find she has a sensitivity to cow's milk.  Good luck!
  • I will email you tonight when I'm not on my phone =)
