Weight Gain Question

I know a few of us have expressed aggravation around people bringing up this topic repeatedly but since weight gain seems to be a grand topic now that we are in our last 1-2 months... I have a question.  Sorry to those of you who are sick and tired of hearing about it :)

I know from my research online that you gain weight (or can gain weight) because of not just the baby, but the extra blood, placenta, fat storage, breasts, etc...

I'm curious why a lot of us are experiencing a surge in weight gain during these 30+ weeks time?  I mean I didn't get my placenta, extra blood, big boobs, fat storage, and a baby last week so why all of a sudden now?

Anyone found the why on this?

Anthony Javier will be here soon!

Re: Weight Gain Question

  • The baby is growing at a much faster rate (by the last 6 weeks I think it's .5 lbs/week) and requires more calories that i think our bodies hold onto just in case they're needed.   I think our bodies retain more water at this point, too.

i'm not an expert, but these theories make sense to me.

This. At my appt on Monday I had gained 4lbs in 2 weeks!!!(yes, I just about fell off the table when she told me this). But she then said it was probably just me retaining more water. I blamed it on Easter candy Smile

This is also what I've read.

  • I have also heard that a lot of the blood increase does happen at this time....along with the bulk of swelling.
  • As pp said, baby gains about half a pound a week starting around now.  Plus, I think many of us are not able to be as active as we were up to this point, so the extra calories that baby isn't taking, aren't being burned

This is an excellent point!  I didn't even think of it but you are totally right!

The baby is growing more. You may want to check your blood pressure. I have read a really sudden increase in weight can be an indicator.

  • I gained a ton from 25-30 weeks and haven't gained any since.  Swelling like a crazy person though and HUGE....its scary how big my stomach is!
  • I gained the majority of my weight so far between weeks 27-31.  I am 5 2 and was 123 pre preg, I am now 144.  So about 21 pounds up.  Gosh thats weird! I hope  I dont gain too much more as my shower is next weekend :)
