Low lying placenta

So I had my anatomy scan this morning.  Happily, the baby looks great - she is growing right on track and is quite active.  The radiologist said that the placenta is too close to my cervix (they had to do a vaginal ultrasound because they couldn't get a view otherwise) and that I'll have to come back again to see if it's moved up. Otherwise, C section for me...

Everyone keeps telling me not to worry and that it might move up on it's own but I just wanted to see if any of you guys had to deal with this previously or are going through it right now?

Re: Low lying placenta

  • I haven't had to deal with it personally, but I know about it from my profession. You still have time for it to move up more in your uterus, depending on how much of your cervix is covered. If it's completely covering your cervix, it may only move a little, but also may move completely off your cervix. If it's only marginally on your cervix (tip of placenta just touching your cervix), there is a very good chance it can move as your uterus grows and stretches. Low placentas can also cause painless vaginal bleeding as the placenta grows and stretches with the uterus. If the placenta completely covers your cervix, and they try to deliver you vaginally, there is a very good chance of placental abruption and blood loss to you - which is why they would do a c-section. Good luck - I hope it moves for you!

  • I was told I had a low lying placenta at 17 weeks. It wasn't placenta previa (covering the cervix) or even a partial previa, just low-lying.  I was told it would move up & sure enough, I had an ultrasound yesterday at 21 weeks & it has already.

So you definitely have hope!  I may be mistaken but in as far as I know c-secs are only necessary for previas.  With a low lying you should still have a chance at a vaginal birth if that is what you want!  Hang in there - I bet it will move up!

  • i haven't but then again my ultrasound is today...after reading things that have been posted i'm really interested in everything about this ultrasound!

  • I was told I have a low lying placenta at my anatomy scan after a vaginal ultrasound too.  Mine is like 1.9 away from the Cervix and they want it to be 2.0.  They thought it was very likely that mine would move up.  I'm not too worried.

  • Mine was discovered at my 12 week u/s.  I had my 20 week u/s today and it's corrected itself.  My OB said that in about 90% of the cases it corrects itself.

  • I was told I have a partial placenta previa, and they are going to continue to monitor the placenta (and if it moves away from the cervix) at each appointment via ultrasound.

Currently, I'm not worried about it because my doctor wasn't concerned since it was still early in the pregnancy and the placenta can move with the growing uterous.

Ditto all of this!!!  My first scan was at 18w6d and my placenta was low lying.  I had a follow up scan 3 weeks later (yesterday) at 21w6d and it had totally corrected.

  • They told me I had this with my first pregnancy. It moved up, thankfully, and all was well long before 40wks.

    Good luck!

  • I went for my scan Monday and I have the same thing.  My doctor told me not to worry too much since it usually moves 95% of the time.  I am hoping mine moves because I really do not want a section since that recovery will be harder when dealing with my DD who will be 21 months.  Lets hope both of ours moves.  I got back at 28 weeks.
  • I have this as well. The midwives didn't seem worried at all, they said it almost always moves out of the way by delivery, but that I should call them if I have any spotting or bleeding.
