DIY fitted crib sheets?

Anybody making their own/plan to make their own?

I can't find sheets that I like, but TONS of cute fabric. I know how to sew, but just curious if anyone has attempted this with any luck. I worry about the safety standards and want to be sure that if I make my own that they are safe.

Any tips?

Re: DIY fitted crib sheets?

  • I making almost everything for LO except sheets.  I too worry about making them snug enough to fit the mattress well enough. I've never really worked with elastic.  I am going to make a changing pad cover.  I figure if that slips it will annoy me, but not be a safety concern for LO.

  • Check your craft store for patterns, I'm sure that they have them, my mom found several patterns for the crib skirt she is making for my LO so I can imagine there are plenty for sheets as well.

  • I made my own fitted sheets.  They are a really snug fit so I am not worried about safety.

I measured the crib mattress dimensions and cut a panel the same size, plus seam allowance.  I then cut a long narrow panel (maybe 8-10 inches) and sewed that around the edge of the first panel, then sewed a wide hem and ran elastic through the entire length, with enough stretch to get it on and off the mattress fairly easily, but tight enough to keep the sheet snug.  Not like a fitted sheet you'd buy at a store, but it worked out fine.
