Still jaundiced?

Probably a longshot to post this here since our numbers are few, but just in case...

At Connor's 2 month appointment our pediatrician thought he still looked pretty jaundiced. His bili was 7 when we left the hospital after birth and no treatment or follow-up was needed. We had noticed that his eyes were still fairly yellow and we got a lot of comments on his "tan", so I wasn't surprised when the pediatrician brought it up last week. He was concerned because at 2 months, really all of the bilirubin should be cleared unless there's a problem. He ordered bloodwork and Connor's bilirubin was 8. Luckily, the direct fraction (ie "bad" type) was only at the upper limit of normal so that ruled out the worst case scenarios. The pediatrician thinks that Connor likely just has "breastmilk jaundice" although it's pretty unusual for it to persist to 2 months. He told us that formula feeding for 24 hours should allow Connor to clear the bili completely, although it wasn't necessary that we do that. I was ok either way but my husband was freaked out about it, so since I was on call last night we did the 24 hours of formula. We'll recheck a level next week. Hopefully that takes care of it, but I'm a little nervous because there are several other disorders that can cause persistent jaundice. Anyone have any experience with this or know anyone who does?

  • No advice here, of course, but I hope his levels come back great next time and everything is okay!!

  • Lucas was still yellow for about 6 weeks. I could see the yellow, but not others. He also had breastmilk jaundice, but we didn't have to give him formula and it cleared up.

  • I don't have any experience, but I'll send some good thoughts that it's nonpathologic. I'm sure being an MD mom makes this about a million times worse.
  • Keegan was still pretty jaundice looking at two months and the dr told me that it was from my breastmilk and he would be just as light skinned as the boys soon.  I can't recall when his eyes stopped looking as yellow and his skin got lighter, but at four months I can't even tell.
