Kinda br - How do you organize books?

As I was taking the library of books that Ella had squirrelled away in her bed and putting them back on her bookshelf, I was wondering...

How do you organize/arrange kids books? By size? Author? Type (board, hardback, etc)?

How about your own books?

I love the bookshelves that are arranged by color, it makes me happy to look at them. But, I think I would go crazy if a book in a series was not with the rest of the books in a series. Same with books by the author.

  • Max's bookshelf has board books on the top shelf since it's the shortest, then books we read now on the middle shelf, and books for when he's a little older on the bottom. Chapter books for when he's even older are stored away for now.

Our books, I group series together and try to sort of group in categories...travel, etc. We just did a massive purge and trip to Half Price though so we don't have nearly as many books in the house. Which we had to do to make room, but it was still sad. Sigh.

  • Mine are just thrown into a bin that we keep in the living room.  But we don't really have anything except board books these days.

  • N's books are on a shelf that he can access.  They're mostly stacked and I sort them about once a week to keep them in order by size.  Our books are in the office by owner or category.  DH stores the bulk of his paperbacks that he refuses to give up under his side of the bed.
  • Our books are arranged by height. It looks less chaiotic. Each shelf has a category, like dog stuff, business, or baby. The high side alternates each shelf so the bookcase doesn't look off balance. I'm not organized by any means, but this is one thing I can do.

  • We have two full shelves in Lila's room, both at her level so she can get to them.  The higher one is taller so it has all our paper page books and bigger board books.  The lower one has shorter board books.  They're generally organized by size, but we've gotten much less anal about it since she pulls them down constantly.  I just can't be bothered.  Though the paper page books always go together when they're back on the shelf.

Ditto this for now, but I really want display bookshelves so he can more easily choose what he wants.

Now OUR books are displayed by category - literature, sci fi, foreign language, political science, business, travel, cooking, outdoor recreation, etc., and then alphabetical by author name within each category. DH thinks I'm nuts.  :)
