Diaper Champ Opinion Please!

Ok, so DH and I registered at BRU this evening...one of the items we reg. for was the Diaper Champ.  I was overwhelmed with different brands of EVERTHING and liked that you can use any bag in the D. Champ.

Anyone have thoughts or opinions on this unit?

TIA

  • I am happy with it and plan to get another one for the new baby's room.  I like that you can use any bag.  I hear alot of people complain about the smell, and I honestly don't know what they are talking about.  And I don't individually bag each diaper or take the poopy ones out to the garbage, I toss them all in the same place because that's what a diaper pail is for.  To me, it takes all of the convenience out of the concept if you have to individually wrap diapers or take others out to the garbage.  Yes, when you change out the old bag for a new one every few days, it smells a little.  But we just do a quick spray of Oust air sanitizer and it's gone.  But on a regular basis when it's just sitting in the room closed, there is no smell.  There are also Arm and Hammer deoderizer inserts that you can put in the pail to help minimize smell if it's a concern.

My SIL had one and loved it.   We thought about getting one but didn't see the point of a diaper pail.   Honestly, the thought of leaving diapers in there for several days just grossed me out.    If the diaper was wet, we tossed into our regular garbage in the kitchen.  That garbage gets emptied out every night.    If it was dirty, it went right out the door into the trash can(our trash cans are 2 steps away from our back door.

However, the fact that you can use regular bags in it is great.    That is why we considered getting one.   I just hated the idea of diapers sitting in there for a couple days.   That's why diaper pails in general just gross me out.

  • I'm not a huge fan after regularly babysitting for friends who have one...I personally think it does smell more than friends who have Diaper Genies.  Also seems like they get filled up & then stuck so hard to open & change sometimes...I have dealt w/ this several times in the last few months at their house!
  • We had it for DS#1 and loved it...till he turned about 2. After that it started to smell bad! I tried everything to get the smell out. But before that it was great. This time around we are going to try the Arm & Hammer one.

  • We have one for DD1, it's worked fine for us.  We do spray it with a bleach cleaner each week when we empty it to sanitize it.  We're planning to get another one for baby#2.

  • I have the Safety First one that is similar and takes any bag. It's $17.99 and well worth the money. I don't smell a single thing. It has a space for a freshner and I put the Arm and Hammer ones in there. I also buy vanilla scented liners.

  • HATE IT!  I have a Diaper Genie on the first floor of my house and love it.  I wanted another pail for my daughter's room upstairs, and my sister recommended I try the Diaper Champ.  I used it for a couple of months and then gave it to Goodwill.  Every time you change the bag, it stinks SO BADLY that I almost puked.  I even tried putting each poopy diaper into a scented bag before putting it in the pail.  Didn't help.  The Diaper Genie is so much better.  It barely smells at all when you change the bag.  Some people complain about the cost of the refills, but they aren't THAT expensive, and you I only change mine about once every two weeks.
