Nurseries and Baby Gear

Anyone make poms for the nursery?

I've seen some really cute pom mobiles on etsy, but they're kind of pricey.  I found a tutorial on how to make them, but I'm just wondering how long they take to make?  I don't have alot of free time right now since my dh travels for work and when I'm home, I'm chasing a toddler around.  If they take a lot of time to make, I might have to purchase them instead!

Re: Anyone make poms for the nursery?

  • They take about 5 min. each to make, and are SUPER cheap to do. I've made them for friends' weddings and showers. Super cute, super easy. And a pack of tissue and some pipe cleaners at the dollar store really makes it affordable! :)

martha stewart's web site has a tutorial, and so do a bunch of other sites. It's just making an accordion out of several layers of tissue, folding it in half and binding it in the center with pipe cleaner, then cutting the ends to be rounded or pointy. Then just (Very carefully, so you don't rip them) spread and separate the layers toward the center, until you have a big, pouffy pom! The pipecleaner that you used to bind it in the center can have fishing line threaded through, so you can hang them from the ceiling.

The cool thing is, there are SO many great colors and patterns of tissue paper out there, so you can make a really neat effect!

  • I have made tissue poms in the past and they never stay looking nice IMO.  I made fabric poms for the nursery and they are really easy and I think should last longer.

If you're interested I posted a tutorial here:

  • I made my own by following the martha stewart directions and they turned out perfect!! I love them and they were so easy to make and much cheaper than buying them on etsy.

Fabric vs. Tissue paper...I'm doing fabric because tissue paper may get funky with weather changes. These look pretty easy. I might end up using a styrofoam ball instead of a lantern if I can't find them!

  • Tissue poms are VERY quick and easy to make. Also very cheap! I don't mind if they look faded after a while... It was so easy and cheap I can make a replacement any time.

Fabric poms look beautiful but are a little more costly and time consuming.

  • Thanks everyone!  I think I might just attempt it on my own.

The fabric poms are gorgeous too!

  • THANK YOU for that fabric pom tutorial, I'll definitely be doing that for our little girl :)
