s/o Names

We have fun posts about how we come up with our LO's names, what we want to name LO's and what names we like from other's lists. It made me think of something else...

How did your parent's come up with your name?

Do you like your name?

Have you ever wanted to change your name?

  • How did your parent's come up with your name?

Supposedly, my mom wanted to name me Kathryn Alison and call me Ally Kat.  My dad thought that was stupid (thank you, dad), so he insisted against it.  My mom was a big fan of the soap opera Heart to Heart with Stefanie Powers.  So, she picked Stefanie Alison.  And that was that.  She said she had never seen Stefanie spelled another way (Stephanie, obviously), and since she was just 16 I actually believe it.

    Do you like your name?

    Yes, I do.

Have you ever wanted to change your name?

There was a time I really liked Alison so much better than Stefanie that I wanted to go by Alison.  But it never stuck.  I used to be annoyed with the unique spelling thing, but I actually like it a lot now.  I used to get called Stacy ALL. THE. TIME. and so I thought, "am I supposed to be a freakin stacy?"...but really, I've always liked my name enough that I never seriously wanted to change it.

  • How did your parent's come up with your name?

My mom said that she always liked it. Growing up, the neighbors had a daughter with my name.

    Do you like your name?

    Meh.

Have you ever wanted to change your name?

I thought about it but couldn't really come up with another name.

  • How did your parent's come up with your name?  My first name is after my Aunt (mothers sister) as is tradition from that side of the family.  Ultimately it has proven difficult to deal with as that side of the family is also prone to Alzheimers and can get very confusing to try and explain who you are in relation to another female.  My middle name is after my paternal grandmother.

My parents agreed that one would "get" the first and then the other the middle, to swap on the second child.  Mom had power of veto though and they compromised on my brothers first name.

Do you like your name?  I love my name, especially with my married surname.  I do get annoyed when folks call me Julie.  I correct you twice, if you don't get it after that I give up and most times let it slide for elders.  I spent a lot of time in the past correcting people and realized that I just came off as a biatch.  Not worth it.

Have you ever wanted to change your name?  Went through a phase in adolesence where I wanted to be called Cassidy.  Identity crisis or something.  I was tired of being called "Little" or by my shortened nick name, Juju.  I've always wanted a different last name and couldn't wait to dump my maiden name.

  • How did your parent's come up with your name? Mostly, they liked it. I think a co-worker of theirs named their child Meghan, plus it's a derivative of Margaret and Marge, which are the names of my mom's aunt and my dad's sister. My middle name, they saw in the newspaper and just liked.

Do you like your name? I don't dislike it. Unfortunately, Meghan happened to be pretty popular the year I was born. I knew a lot of Meghan's in high school.

Have you ever wanted to change your name? Not really.

How did your parent's come up with your name? My mom used to babysit for a family  and the daughter's name was Victoria and they called her Tori. My Mom liked Tori and knew that's what she would call me so she dropped the i so it was less like Victoria.

Do you like your name? Yes. I used to hate it, but now I love having a unique name. It would be nice if everyone got it right, but I'm usually Troy, Lori, Tony, or Victoria.

Have you ever wanted to change your name? When I was kid probably-My sister is Amy and she always had the little bike liscense plates, and pencils, and hair barrettes with her name on it and I got jealous. As an adult you appreciate the uniqueness of your name, and knowing if someone says Tory in a crowd-it's probably you they're looking for!

  • How did your parent's come up with your name?

My first name is my Dad's Mom's name (spelled differently though) and my middle name is my Mom's Dad's name (which is also part of my Mom's name)

    Do you like your name?

I really like my first name...my middle name, good thing it is a family name because other than that, not really.

Have you ever wanted to change your name?

Lol...well, I did. My nickname that is. When I was 13 I decided I didn't like my nickname so I started going by something different...almost 20 years later, here I am.

  • How did your parent's come up with your name? Not entirely sure how they came up with my first name. I believe they just found it in a baby book. I know that there was quite a bit of discussion about how to pronounce it though. My mom wanted it to be pronounced ON-dree-uh and my dad wanted AN-dree-uh. Mom won.

My middle name is after my paternal grandmother. My dad wanted it to be after my maternal grandmother. My maiden name was hyphenated so if  my dad had won my initials would have been AMFM - like the radio. Thankfully my mom nixed that idea.

Do you like your name? I guess. The only thing that bothers me about it is that for the most part people don't say it the "right" way. There are four ways to pronounce the name Andrea so I get that it's tricky, but when people I've known forever still don't say it correctly it can really bother me.

*in case you're curious about the four ways:

    ON-dree-uh (<---my way)

    on-DRAY-uh

    AN-dree-uh

    an-DRAY-uh

Have you ever wanted to change your name? Definitely. When I was little I loved a girl on Days of Our Lives named Carrie so I fantasized about changing my name to that. I also tried going by Kat (part of my middle name) but that didn't stick. Then when my niece was a baby she couldn't say Andrea so she called me Anya. Sometimes people still call me that even though she's 17 now.

  • I'm named after my Grandma.   I don't really love my name or hate it.  I don't know any other Donna's my age.   Yes - I wanted to change my name when I was about 10.  All my friends were "AmY" "JulIE", "WendY", "StephanIE" or they all had nicknames "Jenny", "Stef", etc.   Donna isn't really "cute" nor does it lend itself to a nickname.   Which is all fine now but when you're 10, you want to be like your friends.

Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

  • How did your parent's come up with your name? My parents wanted names that they would use for a girl or a boy, the agreed on Kelly at the 11th hour.

Do you like your name? Yes

Have you ever wanted to change your name? When I was younger I wanted to change the spelling to Kellie, since it was SOOO much cooler.  But no I never really wanted to change my name.

  • CelynCelyn member

My mom decided on Teresa Marie when she was a child.  She never gave my dad a say-so on what to call me.

I really dislike my name.  It doesn't suit me at all.

I spent most of my youth wanting to change it, and my parents told me I could at 18.  By the time I was 18, it was too big an effort to change the name by which that everyone knew me.  Although, about that time I joined a historical reenactment group in which it was expected that you pick a period appropriate name.  I then became known as Celyn for about 15 years old my life.  And now you know the story of my screen name :)

  • How did your parent's come up with your name? My first name is out of a baby name book...we used to find it at random times and look through all the circled names they had in mind for all of us kids. My middle name is after my aunt.

Do you like your name? Yes...now my family nickname took a looooooooong time getting used to as a kid.

Have you ever wanted to change your name? I remember in kindergarten I wanted to change my name but only to my nickname and then got teased more than ever so I just kept it. But, no...haven't wanted to change my name.

  • How did your parent's come up with your name? Well I was supposed to be Tiffany if a girl and Mark if a boy. But one evening my dad was hanging out at the bar (My parents were 21 when I was born) and came home to my mom and proclaimed that he had met the most fascinating man while there. his name was Casey and that is what his child will be named. As for my middle name..I have no idea where it came from.

Do you like your name? Love it!

Have you ever wanted to change your name? I cannot remember every wanting to change it.

  • How did your parent's come up with your name?  They saw it on one of those Stork signs announcing a neighbor's baby on the way home from the hospital (in their defense I did show up 5 weeks early and my Mom was convinced I was a boy).  This should have been a clue to them that me and every other girl born in '82 was going to be named Jessica.

Do you like your name?  It's ok.  I think it fits me.  Although, 99.9% of the time I go by Jess instead of Jessica.

Have you ever wanted to change your name?  Nope

  • My parents named me after the heather which grows in the fields (moors) on the English seaside where my paternal grandparents live.  Love it.

I love my name and I love people with my name.  We have a bond.  I never met one I didn't love.

One year in high school I did, there were just too many Heathers in my class (7!). I tried to go by Bubbles and I actually had an English teacher who called me that for a whole year.  Ha!

  • How did your parent's come up with your name? It was inspired by my mom's name, the name of my mom's friend, and a character in a Barbra Streisand movie.

Do you like your name? Yes, I like my name.

Have you ever wanted to change your name? Nope. I like that I have met few people with my name, which helped growing up because I had a very common last name. I am also glad that my parents didn't go with their second name choice because I had three friends in school with that name.

  • How did your parent's come up with your name? I'm not sure about my first name. My middle name, Marie, is my great grandmothers name.

Do you like your name? Yes

Have you ever wanted to change your name? When I was a kid I wished it was spelled Kristina. I spelled my name that way for the entire 5th grade.

  • How did your parent's come up with your name? My grandmother's name was Adele and her mother's name was something with an F so my mom wanted to name me an A name and a F name. She came up with reasons why many other names would not be good (eg, Alison was not good because my brother was Alan and Amanda was not good because it's similar sounding to my last name, etc), so came up with Amy finally and FeliceDo you like your name?I like the whole thing the way I have it on the bump.  I am not a huge fan of Amy alone because it's super common and sounds like a nickname to me, but it's also very much my name and I'd never change it now. Have you ever wanted to change your name?yes I still think about it. I would like it to maybe be Amelia but honestly what I would love most is if people would actually call me Amy Felice.

  • My dad wanted to name me Christy...my mom said no one would call a 40 year-old woman Christy, so she insisted they go with Christine. To this day, the only person who calls me Christine, is my dad when I'm in trouble. Everyone else calls me Christy, and most likely always will.

I do like my name. There were never any other Christys in my classes growing up so I never wanted to change it.
