NBR: Home phone service/Internet/Cable

We currently have time warner for internet and cable.

Curious what everyone else has? We are looking into getting a home phone service for emergencies only. They of course are trying to convince me to get a bundle with the home phone unlimited in it?! not really what I am looking for.

TIA!

Re: NBR: Home phone service/Internet/Cable

  • We have DirecTV for cable and Time warner for internet. My H is a brat when it comes to cable and internet and he always has to have the best/fastest etc.. so we probably pay more than others. We did have Time Warner for everything before switching to DirecTV and we were paying more through TW than splitting them up. Plus we have more channels on satellite.

We dropped the home phone all together since we never used it. We did have TW phone for probably a year before that and we always seemed to have issues with it. Whenever the cable would go out, the phone was out (obviously), but even more than that it always seemed to have an echo and sound like you were in a tunnel. I don't suggest TW for a phone. I do believe Cincy Bell has a bare minimum option where you pay only a few bucks a month and then pay for usage. That may be something to look in to if you plan to only use it for emergencies.

Yours, too? This is what we have, DTV and RoadRunner. We probably pay too much, but C justifies the extra cost of the super internet because he works from home.

We don't have a home phone, haven't for over a year now, and haven't missed it.

Yeah! That's crazy insane!! I know there is a cheaper plan out there. I think a lady here in my office has it and I will ask her at lunch and let you know.

  • We have incoming calls only on Cincinnati Bell and it's only $5 a month. We have Zoomtown for Internet and Directtv. Our DTV is $67 (2 DVRs and the second package Total Choice Premium or something like that. And then we save $6 for having Cincinnati Bell and Directtv. Our Zoomtown is $34 I think? So its about $106 for everything before taxes.

  • We have had nothing but trouble with TWC since we moved to our house, so we recently switched to DirectTV.  We've had a few weather outages that don't last but a few minutes when the weather is really bad, otherwise though we love DirectTV.  Our internet is now through AT&T.  We can't get uverse yet so we have the slower DSL, but it has been reliable and will upgrade as soon as uverse comes to our area.

Time warner has been horrible with their customer service with all our problems, they dont' keep notes on what the problems were the previous time you had a service call and we had consistent problems, so it was a PITA to have to wait for people to come all the time and tell us the same thing over and over they couldn't seem to fix.  We gave up.

We just have cell phones through AT&T for our phone.  We had a land line for a while for emergencies if the power went out for an extended period, but eventually cancelled it.  I may look into something like magicjack or something where we just can call 911 if need be for a really low price.  We really have no need though for a regular home phone.

  • We have a home phone through TWC - It's a bundle, but we only get local calls unlimited on the phone which made it a little cheaper. I think we pay about $140, but we have HD, HBO which we need to cancel, and the fastest internet, since H works from home.

  • Our internet is through TW.  We're not thrilled with them, but it is what it is.

Our home phone is through ooma.com and is $4 a month for unlimited calls, call waiting, caller ID, and voicemail.  It's run through the internet but acts just like a normal phone for the most part.  It isn't perfect, but it's a good compromise for us since I insisted on having a home phone, but we don't really use it much.

We don't have cable or satellite by choice which is kind of funny since DH and I both used to work for a company that made cable satellites (the type that get launched into space, not the type you put on your house).

  • We have Directv for cable, one HD DVR, one HD, one regular box, for around
$65/month.  We have Cincinnati Bell for home phone and Zoomtown, for around $55/month.  We've been very happy with both.  He's also a tech junkie and he likes both services, we had them in our old house and new house.  We used to have Time Warner and didn't like them at all.
