Hi!
I posted similar questions on another page but thought I would ask here as well.
My husband and I are getting ready to start TTC process and I went to the doctor's to check if everything was functioning correctly. After a series of test, I was diagnosed with Polycysitc Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). One recommendation from the OB-GYN is to take Metformin to help regulate ovulation and aide with other health issues. Do any of you take Metformin? Does anyone have an alternative treatment for PCOS?
Re: PCOS
I, personally, would give it a few months before starting metformin. Unless you're charting or had ultrasounds AND bloodwork throughout a cycle you won't know if you are ovulating. Just because you have PCOS doesn't mean you will 100% have problems TTC or not ovulate. Assuming you will be coming off some type of birth control, it will take your body months to regulate.
I've taken metformin since Fall 2010 and its no walk in the park. Be prepared for major stomach upset for a few weeks while adjusting to it. Also, I take it for insulin resistance with my PCOS. Did you do a glucose test? Not all women with PCOS have insulin resistance.
It can take a normal couple a year to concieve. Since you have a diagnosis I would probably give it 6 months and then go to an RE. I wouldn't waste your time with an OB. An RE can prescribe Clomid/Femara/injectibles if needed to induce ovulation but at this point you don't really know if its an issue.
Good luck!
After more than 2 years of fertility treatments, FET did the trick!
IVF March 2012 - BFP! - Severe OHSS = 8 days in the hospital in kidney failure
No heartbeat at 10w6d
FET August 27,2012 = BFP!
It's a boy!

I've been taking Met for the past few months now for IR and PCOS. It made my stomach upset for the first couple days, but I've been fine ever since. You may just need to stick to a strict low carb/sugar diet. It's improved my fasting insulin results already. I have a period every month like clockwork, but was told that I may not be ovulating like I thought. I use FF and that program even showed that I was ovulating. Very frustrating to think you're ovulating for over a year and find out that you weren't. Anyway, I think the Met is helping with that as I'm showing a bigger "jump" in temperatures around ovulation time. Time will tell!
Good luck!
I was diagnosed with PCOS I'd say about four years ago. I tried Metaformin, it didn't work for me personally - I waited a few years and tried naturally, still no baby - but now I'm on Clomid, just started this month I'm on CD 14, took an Ovulation Test this morning and from what I've been told by the lovely ladies on the board, it's ALMOST time.
SO... Clomid is another option, but they don't generally prescribe that up front - they want you to try Metaformin first, that's okay to take for long periods of time, Clomid is not to be taken for more than six cycles.
It's frustrating but people get pregnant with PCOS all the time. Another place you can visit is BabyCenter.com they have a group specifically for Living with PCOS, the women there are very helpful too!
I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2007. It was confirmed via bloodwork and ultrasounds with my RE. I had been off BCP for 6 months and my periods just stopped completely at that point.
I was put on Metformin 1500mg. I had to gradually work up to 1500mg. I took 500 for the first week, 1000 for the second week, and 1500 the third week. Once I worked up to it, I was ok. But I did have stomach upset. I always take it at night with dinner.
Since I knew that I was not ovulating at that point, I was put on Femara. I took Femara from CD3-7 and on CD14 I had an ovidrel injection to force ovulation.
I had my son in December of 2008. Healty pregnancy. Healthy baby. I literally had no issues for two years. I had regular 28 day cycles on the nose. Normal menstruation.. everything was completely normal. Maybe 2-3 months ago, my cycles started to gradually get longer.. short length.. less intensity.. led me to believe I may not be ovulating regularly.
Since been seen by my OB. Started Met again yesterday. Not been a good morning. I feel like crap actually. My stomach has been upset all mornning. CD 6 today.. started clomid yesterday. See my OB on 05/10 and my RE on 06/03. My OB is monitoring this cycle because I couldn't get into my specialist until June and because I already have a diagnosis and have had treatmen before.
Good luck to you!
