second ultrasound 11wks

Had our second ultrasound today at 11wks 3d and they still aren't sure if the babies are in their own sac or not yet, not sure if they are identical or not. I'm happy as long as they are healthy wether they are fraternal or not but now they have us wondering what if? We have another ultrasound next week to check our odds of birth defects and the doc thinks that will settle it. Just curious if any of you have had a hard time seeing the line between the babies early on and ended up with fraternal? or if it just never showed up? Since fraternal are less risky we're hoping for that esp since Im coinsidered high risk with my age already. sorry Im babbling just wanted to get this out there and see if anyone else has had this and how it turned out for you?

  • That is surprising.  I had a 5 week ultrasound and he told me he saw two yolk sacs.....I would think you would know by 11

  • With ID's it can be very very difficult to determine if they are in one sac or two, the line can be hard to detect. I would contact a perinatologist if they can not determine if there is a line or not next week. Sometimes a Peri can find a line that the U/S's at a regular OB office can not find. And even if they are in two sacs they can be identical, but definitely a safer type of twin pregnancy.

  • I'm no expert, but I've seen a clear difference between identical (monochorionic) and fraternal (dichorionic) ultrasounds.  Of course some identicals are dichorionic and you won't find out until they are born.  I was about 11 weeks at my first u/s and we saw a very thin membrane between them. It looked almost like a dashed line.  At 15 weeks, it was not even visible to me.  My OB said she was 99% sure they were identical because there is one placenta.

You can see my u/s pic in my siggy.  Do you have a picture you can put on here?  How many placentas?  I know someone a few weeks ago had a diagram that explained it very well.

If your OB hasn't already, I would ask to be referred to a Maternal Fetal Medicine/Peri.

Thanks for the info, I dont have a pic from the last visit and you can't see it in the first us pic I have from 7wk 4d. OB said it looks as if there is one placenta though, not sure if that means anything or not. We have another us may 5 to find out our risks and OB believes they will be able to tell us more since its a very detailed us at that appt.

    Congrats to you!
