kellyA or anyone else that pumped on a long trip away from kiddo

Didn't you go to Mexico without your little one and pumped the whole time?

How long were you gone?  How often did you pump?

My goal was 6 months BFing.  We will be going to Mexico for 4 nights when she's just around 7 months. C will stay home with Grandma and Grandpa.

I'm thinking of trying for longer(since I'll be home a good chunk of the summer) but I'm nervous pumping in Mexico is going suck donkey balls.

Re: kellyA or anyone else that pumped on a long trip away from kiddo

  • I just got back from Jamaica, 5 nights, 6 days away from LO.  LO is 9 months.  I pumped 5-6 times a day.  For some odd reason we were up at 6 EVERY MORNING, so I pumped then.  We hung out and I pumped usually around 8 or 9ish or right before our excursion, then I would pump when we got home usually around 2 or 3.  We choose to do the half day and morning /early afternoon excursions.  I had no problems going through security with my cooler filled with milk.  I did have to dump the first day because I would not be able to freeze.  I also dumped one of my pumpings the last day because I did not bring enough bottles to pump into.  I do not think my supply was affected that much, but she did not want to have anything to do with me the day I got back.  She would not nurse and only wanted my mom, the next morning she was back on the boob.  I would do it all over again.  Make sure you bring enough batteries for back up if you have the PISA.  My electric cord stopped working and I had some back up batteries but not enough, so I bought some at the gift shop.  4 bucks for 2, ugh.... Have fun.
  • I'm pretty sure I'll be having to dump a lot :-). I plan on boozing it up lol Thanks! Good call on the batteries.

  • Also bring something do read/do while pumping, most times I wanted to stab my eyes out and found myself staring at the clock waiting for my 15 mins to be up.
  • I did, I pumped and dumped while there.  I ate and drank like a fool and came home 2lbs lighter!  I wanted to save it, but logistically it wasn't possible with the necessary cleaning/sanitizing of pump parts.  I pumped 4-5 times per day, I pumped both sides each time and DD was only nursing on one side per feeding...so I over pumped, oopsie (hence the weight loss and feeling like I'm starving).

Keep up with your regular routine and maybe add one pumping session for stimulation and you'll be fine!

  • FWIW...DD jumped out of my mom's arms into mine when she saw me.  Nursed instantly so you never know, your DD could have either reaction.
  • I hope your DD has KellyA's DD reaction, mine was not pleasant and I cried.  But It was all better the next morning.

BIG hugs to you, I cried fearing this on the way out the door when we left...it was SO stressful.  I hope if you're apart again she remembers that you're coming back and is ok!

And I hope I didn't offend you by sharing my experience. I am leaving DD again for 8 days here in two and a half weeks and I'm stressing again about her not wanting me and being mad at me.  I am trying to remind myself that even if she is mad she'll be ok within a few days.
