Just started reading "Room" and it's awful!

I am about 70 pages into it and I don't really want to keep reading because it bums me out. But so many people have said it's so good, I'm compelled to keep going.

Anyone read it? What did you think? Right now I'm wanting to know how the mother got trapped, I hope they end up explaining that.

  • Who is it by? Haven't heard of it.

  • You know, people rave about it, but I wasn't all that impressed.  I got really annoyed by the 5-year-old perspective to name one thing.

It's disturbing and thought-provoking, but not my favorite.

    Ditto this. I wasn't a huge fan.
  • I loved it.  I listened to it in the car with DD and she loved it too.  It is narrated by a "child" on the CD, she didn't get the sub context, just the big story line.  It was interesting to listen to with her (I had planned to switch to my ipod when the story got bad, but there are really only a few parts, toward the end where I felt I really needed to do that.)  I am kind of fascinated by criminal behavior, particularly serial and missing persons, so it was interesting to me from the real cases I have read.

    The author is Emma Donoghue.

I'm only 70 pages into it, as I mentioned, but I can see how it's an interesting perspective, but I just feel bad for the little boy right now. I am interested to see where this story is going to go.

It is a good book.  Worth the read.  I agree it is a sad story.  Amazing when you think of the outlook of the 5yo when you know his situation from an adult perspective.  Children are amazing.  Keep reading, I don't think you will regret it.

I just finished it (and mailed it off via paperbackswap actually).  It annoyed me in places but overall I enjoyed it.  The writer is irish.  A lesbian living in canada.  I grew up in ireland so it was just an extra piece of info for me.

  • Its a phenomenal book; I think I read it in one sitting.  I don't remember how detailed the description of her abduction is, but I found pretty much everything about the book riveting.
  • It took me 2-3 times to actually get into it, but once I did I really enjoyed it. Keep going!

  • I thought it was pretty disturbing, but kept reading it because I wanted to know how everything turned out.  I wouldn't say it's a favorite book by a long shot, but it was decent.

  • It is disturbing, totally agree!  I didn't like this book at all but still finished it just to know what happened.  I wish I wouldn't have picked it up to begin with.  One similar book in that it's disturbing and still gets high ratings is Sarah's Key.  That is another one I wish I would have passed on, ug.
  • It cannot be worse than "The Land of Painted Caves".

However, I'm determined to finish it this week and wash my hands of Jean Auel and the series that had such promise in the beginning.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
