VBAC

VBAC discussion with my Dr.

Hello girls!

Today at my son's appointment I told my Dr. that I am expecting, I will not officially see her for another 3 weeks or so.  I asked her if she had a chance to look over my notes from DS's birth.  She said that she did read up on them and understood why my previous Dr. wanted me to have a CS, because of his heart tones.  She also said that I would be a great candidate for a VBAC because I made it to a 9, and who knows what would have happened if his heart rate was not decellerating so much.  She said that if I would have pushed and pushed and would have never been able to push him out, I would need a RCS.  Basically she is 110% on board with letting me go for a VBAC!  I made sure of that before I left!

But because I go to a small clinic, she is concerned about coverage for a VBAC (they want to have a surgeon there just in case).  So, she told me that at about 34 weeks I might have to transfer to a bigger hospital about 30 min away to see a OB there so that I can deliver via VBAC with guarented surgeon coverage.  I am completely ok with this, as long as I get to try for a VBAC!  Of course my DH wants me to stay here in town because it will be easier for him when we do have the baby, but ultimately he told me it was my decision (my body!).

I am scared to get my hopes up too high though because she did say that she will not induce me with meds.  Which is what I want, but there is a catch.  If I am 41 weeks and not dialated, I will have to have a RCS.  What do you girls think of this?  What can I do to alleviate?!  Good thing is, if I go naturally before 41 weeks or if I am 41 weeks and dialated enough to break my water I get to try for a VBAC.

My mind is just spinning, I am happy but yet I do not want to be too happy!  I cannot wait to hear what you think!

I am confused and concerned about this surgeon coverage thing. Are you in a family practice, so she isnt an OB? I think that that could become a real issue...there is no guarantee you can stay with this provider and of who you will end up with in the bigger hospital. It is easy to provide lip service to VBAC and then make it difficult for a tired very pregnant mom to have her VBAC. The great news is you are newly pregnant and excited to VBAC. You have the time and attitude to research the right questions to ask and to find a great provider if you don't like the answers this one gives you.

  • Yes, it is a family practice and she is not an OB but has done many births, VBACS, etc.  The thing is they are getting a new surgeon so she is pretty sure that they will have coverage, but she will not know until much later in my pregnancy.  Do you think that I should just try to find an OB to deliver me in the bigger hospital right away instead of waiting?

I just want to say don't necessarily believe this part.  With DS #1 I pushed for 3 hours and just couldn't get him out.  I had a successful VBAC with #2 and pushed for just about an hour.  Every baby and labor is different!

As for your question, I think their rules are pretty fair and I'd be happy with them.  For my OB they said if I got to 40 weeks and and wasn't dilated it was a RCS.  If I was 40 weeks and starting to dilate they'd give me a few more days to go into labor..so I'd be ok with their plan.

I would at least find an ob.  Maybe still see your regular dr, but make sure you have a back up dr. just in case.

  • How long did you go with your first?

ITA! I fully dilated and had the urge to push, but by then we'd already decided on c/s due to Bean's position. If they hadn't checked her position, I'd have pushed who knows how long and there was no way she would have come out. I pushed half an hour with my VBAC, no issues.
