As a parent, I will never...

Re: As a parent, I will never...

  • make fun of them for singing in the shower.......  Granted, it was "Achy Breaky Heart" and I was about 7 or 8, but I still won't sing out loud to this day and that song makes me turn beet red.  True story.

  • Let me preface this by saying I do not care about dressing my child in the latest trends, etc. and when my child is old enough to have a style, I will be more than happy to be accommodating. But I will, I will, I will care about how my child is dressed and the hair cut that he has so that he does not have to look back twenty years from now and cringe at what he looked like for most of his childhood. Both DH and myself have this reaction when we look back at our childhood pictures and have promised ourselves that we won't do this to our kid (although, it would make for a hilarious slide show at our kid's future wedding!).

I will never use saliva to clean my childs face.

Lol. DH calls this mommy spit. And asked me recently if I had perfected mine yet. I proceeded to lick my hand and wipe down his hair with it. I looked critically at his hair and said, "It still needs work." He looked really shocked for half a second then laughed.

  • I will never deny my children an answer to their questions because I think they are too young to understand. Being a fairly intelligent (yet gullible) child, this was really difficult for me.

I'll never let my child dictate what they will or will not eat at every meal. I'm sure that I'll just give in on occasion (who doesn't?) but I'm not a short order cook and I'm not letting my child eat chicken strips, french fries, and mac & cheese at every meal.  She needs to learn to at least try what's given to her.

This was always mine! And I've stuck to it so far with DS. My mom always made 3 or 4 different meals for us growing up and I swore I would not live in the kitchen like she did. Sometimes it is hard, but it is totally worth it! DS knows he has to try anything on his plate and if he doesn't like it then it eats more of the other stuff... but I think he has become a great eater becasue he knows thats the only option and he has liked so many things that he said he wouldn't. Stick to your guns.

I will never allow him to go to sleep with a bottle of apple juice causing all of his teeth to rot out...

This is totally off subject but, are those all little ferrets that you have in your siggy? Oh, How I wish you lived closer because I have a little girl that I need a good home for! (I have developed ridiculous allergies to her since being pregnant)  :(

Let my child run around a restaurant laughing and screaming with busy food servers everywhere.  I experienced this when I worked in a restaurant in college.  I can't tell you how may times a kid almost made me drop trays of food/beer either on them or another table while their parents sat and watched...AND did nothing about it. It drove me crazy!!

    THIS!!!

  • I will never make her feel indebted to me for the things I do for her.

She is my child, that means I will have to provide for her as best I can. She doesn't owe me for what I willingly give to her.

My mom throws everything she has ever done for me in my face and makes me feel guilty when she asks for something I can't do/give. Ugh!

I won't even answer this question, because I've gone back on about 90% of all the things I said I'd never do. lol

I may even bump that up to 95% of the things I said I would never do (says the mom of a 20 month old who just got a backpack leash for DD1....)

    Yes

I think that the "because I said so" answer can be very limiting to a child's development.  I was very curious as a child, but heard this constantly.  I think I would've benefited more from my parents modeling decision-making for me by sharing how they came to a decision than by them saying, "Because I'm the parent!"

This doesn't necessarily always apply though.  There's a difference in telling a whining or screaming child to obey without question and refusing to answer a politely asked, "Why?"
