Can I "order" my own u/s?

Anyone know of any places where I could get an ultrasound done? My MWs don't do any until the 20-week one and I don't see them every 4 weeks, so I can't hear the baby's heartbeat as often as I'd like... So I'm wondering if I could get an u/s done somewhere by my own request? I am not necessarily fond of the 3D/4D ones, so a regular u/s would be fine for me!

TIA!!!

  • I believe you have to have a doctor's order to have an u/s done.

The elective places that do 3D/4D require the anatomy scan be done before scheduling with them

Not quite true.  They only require that you have had either an ultrasound done (must bring a picture) or a letter from your doctor that says you are receiving prenatal care.

I went to Enlightened 4d Imaging for a gender ultrasound before my anatomy scan and they were wonderful!  They do 2d and 3d/4d.  Check them out if you are interested!  They are located in Bloomington.

This is not true. I went in at 15 weeks to do a gender screening at Bella Angel, in Maple Grove. Sounds to me like you need to buy a fetal doppler so you can hear your babys heartbeat whenever you want. They aren't all that expensive and you can buy them online. Otherwise, the 3d/4d places have to same technology as your doctors office and are capable of running a regular 2d ultrasound (black & white). Keep in mind though, the elective ultrasound places do not have the same type of training you will find in a doctors office so it is strictly for fun.

  • Interesting.  I thought all the 3D/4D sites state that you have to have had an ultrasound showing there are no fetal abnormalities prior to using their service.  I guess things have changed in the last year.

Yeah, Bella Angel does not require you having a previous ultrasound.  They don't require a doctor's note either.

I was fine with them, I got some decent pictures.  But they are not certified ultrasound techs and I've seen people from other 3d places with much better pictures. But it was comfortable and fun.

Just remember that if you do get an ultrasound on your own, your insurance won't cover any of it.  I paid $100 for mine at Bella at 16 weeks.
