i don't have one to recommend i just wanted to say that you have a LONG time before you really need to worry about baby gates. i wouldn't stress about finding one now. it'll probably be nearly a year before you need one and who knows what new stuff will be out by then
I also have the First Years Hands Free gate and I LOVE it! It's so easy to open that even my 6 year old can get in and out. I did need the extender to put it in my livingroom door, which I do not consider to be large, so that cost an extra $15. I also like that is doesn't have a spring to shut if left open, so I can leave it open if I want to give DD extra freedom or after she goes to bed.

I completely understand what you're saying. I should've mentioned that the gate is mainly meant to keep the dog from getting into the babies' things. We have a mischevious 3 year old basset hound who is quite the troublemaker.

I think one step ahead makes one that opens with your foot...you step on a little pedal and it opens.
