Pregnant after a Loss

Does cherry and espresso wood match?

We ordered a recliner/rocker for LO. The upholstered one but DH best friend offered us his traditional glider which we figured could go in the nursery and we will put the new one downstairs where we will spend most of our time. We like the cushion color but the wood on it is cherry and our nursery furniture is espresso. What do you think?

Re: Does cherry and espresso wood match?

  • It would bother me. I'm not a giant fan of cherry and it is a lot more red tinted than espresso. I feel like it would clash.

  • It could go either way.  Some cherries are dark and it would be fine, but others are more red.  If it's just the wood on the glider, it may not be extreme enough for anyone to notice (or care).  Do they sell them at the same store to compare?

  • If you get it in there and it clashes too much, why not put the upholstered one in the nursery like you had planned and the cherry one downstairs?

. Apparently we like espresso colored wood cuz looking around this house all this wood is dark! Since the downstairs is bigger it might not look so bad.

  • No, it doesn't match.  We have a cherry toy box and espresso furniture and the cherry is much, much lighter.  If you are picky, don't get it.

  • We are going to get all espresso furniture for the baby room, but we got the glider in cherry wood bc the cushions on the espresso glider were fugly. lol I'm hoping it won't look too bad!

  • It is hard to say without seeing it.  My DD crib and furniture is black cherry...but it is so dark that it probably would match espresso.  But like others said, if it is just for a glider, it may not be a big deal.

  • i DONT want to come off sounding pretentious, but I am an interior designer and there are a few rules with wood.  Cherry wood, can actually be stained espresso, so it first depends on the wood grain.  If it is very grainy espresso wood like oak, it may clash with the very smooth grain of cherry.

If your espresso has kind of a reddish tint to it, it will be fine with cherry.  Cherry will be lighter, but unless you want your room to look like you bought everything off a showroom floor it should be fine.

Most people like to vary their stains, and grains, it gives it more of an eclectic feel and looks like you have had the pieces for more than a week.  Hope this helps.

. This actually helps a lot. It looks pretty dark from the picture so we will see. Thanks ladies

  • I think it really depends on the shade of cherry...as long as its dark I think you'll be ok...especially if the majority of what you see is the cushions.  We bought out crib and glider already stained then we stained our dresser and bookcase to match as close as possible, but even with the same stain since the two different pieces are made of different wood, they are not identical.  It's not like you're putting a walnut or birch color with expresso--that would bother me.
