I guess in almost 5 years of parenting 2 boys, we're lucky we got this far without having the ER/stitches experience. DS#1 tripped into the coffee table this morning and split his lip. I heard the thud, scooped him up to give him a hug and comfort him and didn't realize how bad it was until I pulled back and there was blood all over his face and my shoulder. What a heart-dropping moment as a parent to just see blood and not know the extent of the injury yet.
He ended up with 4 stitches and was such a little trooper! The only thing that's really freaked him out was when he tried to eat some applesauce and there was blood in it. He'll get the stitches out in 5 days. I had stitches a handful of times as a kid, but watching your kid go through it is far worse!
Anyhow, just wondered about other parents stitches experiences...
Re: Has your DC had stitches before?
My DD 2 years ago split her forehead between her eyes open all the way down to her skull. I did what you did ran over picked her up she was outside with my sister and held her I did not even know what happened at that time I just heard her scream like never before and my sister also scream and just went into action when I pulled her away to look I started to freak. The worse for me was when they had to put her on a board and strap her down and she there were 3 nurses and a doctor on her and she was still breaking through the restraint. That was the worse for me I constantly remind her she has used her 1 and only scare mommy to death card and it is not to happen again. She was a trouper through out the whole thing she does not remember the stitching part because they gave her medicine to forget that part of the night but she remembers most of it and still tells the story even though she was only 2 when this happened. Its her beauty mark as she now calls it
OMG, you must've had a heart attack. Glad she was ok, but I'll bet that was terribly scary to live through.
Twice.
Audrey when she was just learning to walk, so right around one, tripped and split her lip on the coffee table. It wasn't HORRIBLE, but it was in a bad place where it would have healed with a scar without stitches. DH took her in because I was pregnant with M. and needed to take care of Tay...hardest thing ever..I wanted to go SOOO bad. But in the end I'm glad I didn't..they had to papoose her down to keep her still and she screamed a LOT. I took her to the doc to get them removed and she did pretty good for that..but I had to hold her down pretty much...I HATE that look of "MOMMY WHAT ARE YOU DOING!" Hate it.
And then just last month. Tay tripped and fell, crashing into the corner of the doorway where the trim work meets...12 stiches, 4 were internal, 8 external. heads bleed A LOT! And this sucker was deep. She was a trooper. She laid there while I read a book to her and she never once cried after the initial cry when she saw all the blood. The nurse started out holding her head, but then said "We are just getting each other hot and sweaty and you are holding your head just fine, so I'm going to let go if you can continue to keep still!" and she did.
I must have been a cautious child, because I have NEVER, EVER had a broken bone or required stitches...but now all three of my kids have broken one bone each, and 2/3 have gotten stitches (or maybe its just that I'm a horrible parent who doesn't pay enough attention??) I'm blaming it on my kids getting my DH's clumsiness...DH was the kid who broke bones and got lots of stitches...had 2 or 3 concussions from falls, etc.
Joey got stitches in his eyebrow at 10 months old. I can safely say that it was the 2nd worst day of my life (1st was the day my father broke my mother's nose while we were in the car). Joey had a walker and went straight down the basement stairs in it -- the thoughts of what could have happened make me want to puke. And yes, I'm one of "those moms" that "allowed" her child to go down the stairs in the walker. I almost puked, then almost passed out when they were stitching him. And it's not because I'm squeamish....it's because they were hurting my baby! I wanted to die that day!
Anyway - he had 3 stitches in his eyebrow and had a black/swollen shut eye for days.
Cam also had stitches just two summers ago. She fell down the rock jetty at the beach. The amount of blood that was on the rocks when I bent over the pier to see her, laying just inches away from the water, on a rock with blood all around her. HORROR movie! 3rd worst day of my life. And only 3rd because I was just a slightly less "reactive" mom since I already had one kid and the whole injury thing under my belt!
She got 2 stitches in her forehead above her eye -- Joe still insists it wasn't necessary and he wouldn't have brought her if he was the one there that day but whatever...the DOCTOR (you know, the professional!) felt it was necessary so I went with it! LOL She screamed her bloody head off while they were doing the stitches and I was so uncomfortable. I don't think there is any other way to describe it. Just plain uncomfortable. But she snapped back almost instantly when they let her pick out a popsicle! LOL
