Cribs are driving me nuts

There are so many cribs out there on so many different websites. I feel like I have looked at them all. I don't know the sex of the baby yet, so it's really hard for me to find a crib. I can't decide on anything. I am so afraid that I am going to pick one out and then they won't have the conversion kits anymore or something. How did everyone decide and what kind of crib did you get?

  • my husband and i choose a unisex crib that we would like for both a girl and boy. which also works out great if we decide to pass it down after. the crib we choose was the babyappleseed davenport collection.

  • We already knew the gender when we bought, and once we started shopping in person, we changed everything we thought we wanted in a crib.  It's kind of funny.  Once we started seeing the actual quality of the wood and craftsmanship, we made a different decision than we thought we would (and spent more).  We're happy with the choice, though.

We went with the Slat Crib in white cotton from Young America.  It's made so well, quality hardwood, and super easy to assemble, too.

  • we bought the graco lauren for ds and just bought another one for lo on the way.  I used the baby bargains book for explanations, comparisons, and recommendations.

  • We chose a gender neutral crib that we can use for future babies.(Ikea Gulliver - $100)

It converts to a toddler bed, but it doesn't convert to a full sized bed after that. For us it was unnecessary for the crib to be a convertible crib. But it's really a personal choice.

  • I had picked out the crib of my dreams which was $$$.  Then I found one that was similar in style and color but matched my $ budget.  I had to compromise on style but that helped me narrow it down.  I am pretty set in my style ascthetic so it was easy for me to eliminate most options right from the start.  I guess I would think about what goes with the flow of what is already in the house and start there.

  • We didn't have a hard time, mainly because I went with what Baby Bargains recommended, and knew we wanted white furniture for a boy or girl.

DD has the Ikea Gulliver crib and Hemnes dresser.  We also have 2 sets of white shelves in there.

  • Another rec to use Baby Bargains in making your choice.  I forgot to mention, but we used that, as well.

  • We got the Bonavita Peyton Lifestyle for my son.  I loved the lines of it, and I read reviews online, so we bought it.

Then, after having it for 19 months with my son and not a MARK on it, we didn't even have to think twice about it, we bought the exact same one again.  We now have one in white and one in espresso, with matching Ikea dressers.

  • I would just choose one that goes with your decor and is affordable to you and not worry about converting it.  I bought a convertible crib and purchased the rails for it in advance but since we recently lowered the crib, someone, not sure who (MIL or DH) scratched it with a belt buckle or a metal button when reaching over.  Also, one of my cats jumped in it before we had our baby and scratched the top railing.  I'm not sure if I want to convert it anymore since it's going to get all scratched up.  And it's a fairly nice crib, not a budget one.
  • First, give yourself a price range.  That will narrow your selection.  Then, pick a color.  Use websites to read ratings.  Also, an alternative to the rails would be a metal bed frame that they sell with mattresses.  You're going to cover it up with a bedskirt, so no one's the wiser.  Good luck, and don't let it stress you out.  Trust me, there are so many other things to stress about!

  • Remember that toward the end of June they are changing the cribs that are considered "safe" so you may want to wait until after that...

I am screwed because I already bought and assembled the Ikea Gulliver. I plan to keep it anyway because I do still feel it is safe.
