Baby Names

Rock

In my professional life, I run into a guy named Rock pretty frequently at conferences and seminars. He is probably in his mid-40s. I dont know him well enough to ask about his name, but was wondering if anyone knew if this was a nickname for something (like Richard?). Of course, I have heard of Rock Hudson...but I just dont know what the origin of the name is...

His name is always published as "Rock Lastname", so it is what he uses professionally.

  • According to wikipedia Rock Hudson's given name is Roy.  My guess is that it can be a nn for any R name.  I don't think it has a standard full name, like Bob and Robert or Bill and William.

  • I have a close friend named Rock. Or at least that's what he goes by. His real name is William Harrison ______ IV. Since there's 3 other William's in his family, they started calling him Rock when he was little and it stuck.

  • I know somebody called Rock, but his real name is Rockwell...  might just be his actual name, tho, I dunno that somebody would use it professionally if it was just a nickname.  hmm.

  • It's one of those things where I would shudder if someone named their baby that, but it probably works for him now that he's an adult.  On a similar note, I know someone that has a one year old named Stone.
