CDing for newborns

I took advantage of the Earth Day sales last night and stocked up on CDs. I bought OS diapers, but was wondering about newborns. I noticed that many people find that OS diapers are too bulky for newborns and use prefolds instead. I am a little confused on prefolds and how they would be used. Can someone explain? Also, has anyone used OS diapers for newborns and have been fine with it?

It's not necessarily an issue of bulk, it's more an issue of the diaper being too big to fit on your newborn. This can mean gaps and leaks.

Prefolds are basically a quilted piece of cloth folded to put on your LO as a diaper. Think old-school CDs. Youtube has some great prefold videos, as there are a myriad of folds you can use, and at least 3 ways to secure them on your baby (pins, Snappi, or laying inside a cover).

I never used OS diapers on my DD. She was too much of a peanut. They didn't fit until she was 3 months.

I love my prefolds and covers.  It is the route that we are continuing and I am now using OS Flip covers and still using prefolds.  I also use Bummis Whisper small covers, but my baby was big at birth.  She could fit into the OS Flips at one month.  But, I would definitely do prefolds and covers for the first month.  They are a cheap option too!

We are using prefolds and Thirsties covers for our newborn.  I thought I would prefer All in Ones once she was big enough and had bought a selection to see what we liked, but we found we like the prefolds and covers better, so we are sticking with them.  So far we are able to just lay the prefold inside the cover and have not had to use snappis or pins.  Easy!

Ok. How many covers should I buy? I'll just need them until baby can fit into the OS diapers.

We have 6 but we have to wash every day.  I just bought 10 covers for the next size up so I can switch to washing every other day.

This depends on how you use your pre-folds.  If you just trifold them in the cover, they get poop on them faster.  If you fold the pre-fold onto baby (for DD we use the Jellyroll as it seems to work best) then there is less chance of the poop escaping.  This is what I do and am fine with 4 covers, doing laundry every other day.
